Default My TACHOMETER is spazzing out!

My engine accelerates and runs fine. But once the RPM reaches right below 6k on the tachometer the needle shakes and then drops to 0. Car is still accelerating smoothly, but the RPM gauge isn't functioning after 6k rpm. Once I shift and drop the RPM, the RPM reading resumes.

Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks!

^^^ if that doesn't work could be either the VSS or cluster or any of the wires inbetween.
first check for loose wires, then swap cluster, then try a new vss if you can

I made sure wires on distributor were secured. Still have the problem. I'm going to have to do some research on the distributor system and vss systems.

vaspeeder what was your solution?

I looked up some prices for distributor, on ebay they've got them as low as $100, but in stores they're ~$400. Does that sound right? Any suggestions where to get one?

Its the igniter the dizzy. If you know anyone, or maybe a local shop might have one laying around you can replace it or buy a new distributor

Yeah i agree on the igniter. Usually start doing this before they go out. Also make sure your plug wires are in good shape. Secondary voltage does weird things to electronics.

I went aftermarket with a distributor king distributor one time.......I ended up having to buy an oem one not long afterwards...cant go wrong with oem!

My king has been running well for quite some time now. I think a lot of the aftermarket electronics are hit or miss though.

Well I opened distributor and found one loose wire. Pushed it in, still have same problem. It actually sometimes dies out at 5k after tightening wires. I bought a 97 distributor on craigslist for $50, wires are jacked up, but I'll use it for replacing the ignition coil and/or ICM. I'm looking through the maintenance manual, and is the ICM part of the ignition coil? Can't really tell from diagram. I'll figure it out once I tear it apart.

We'll see what happens. Thanks for all replies.

2001 Acura Integra GSR. Not sure on ecu, but the previous owner said the ecu had skunk2 reflash or something like that. I didn't know if he was just giving me some bull or not so I don't know whether or not that statement was true. How can you tell if your ecu has been altered with?

You're an idiot.

...and why is this in the all motor forum? Shouldn't it be in tech?

Tachometer only dies out when there is a load on the engine. When I rev up in neutral the tachometer climbs rpm smoothly without a problem.
