My Mild B20 Daily Driver Setup Thread w/lots'o pics!
So lets start out with how I got the car. I bought about 8 months ago, with an LS-V in it had a golden eagle conversion kit and a bunch of other nice parts on it. The car needed a little bit of work but the shell was clean title, had gsr leathers, and was low miles. I noticed that it leaked a decent amount of oil from the headgasket right underneath the vtec solenoid, but I've had plenty of b series motors that love to leak right there so I didn't think much of it.
Here are some pics of when I first got the car
After driving it around for a month or so, It had become obvious that the oil leak was not just a small leak, but was definitely losing a considerable amount of oil, so I decided I would replace the headgasket and make sure everything was all good and hopefully it would be fixed. I did this only to find out that the builder (whoever they were) didn't use dowel pins in the head, didnt have the right head gasket, they also used the wrong head studs, and to top it all off, there was a ton of burnt oil caked into cylinder 3. After spending about 6 hours on a job that should have taken 2, it was finally done, and I didn't really care that it burnt oil because I was planning on swapping it anyway.
Found a set of Konig Candy's with good tires in trade for my slips with bald tires and $150 on my end. COME UP!
About a week later, I find a guy interested in trading my ls-v for a b20b with crower 403's and a lot of headwork. I of course SWOOOPED THAT ****(and just to clarify the other guy knew my bottom end smoked, I believe in Kharma )
Pics of the ls-v gettin pulled

In the car
Motor went in without a problem. The only issue I had was that the header I was originally going to use did not fit on the motor because the head was decked .0030 and it was hitting on the support ribs of the block, so I got stuck with this shitty dc ceramic header lol
Ended up getting a hytech replica header for $130 shipped! Here are some more pics, changed one of the cam gears to blue, also cleaned the gates racing timing belt and got a nicer looking ground for the valve cover
Drove the car like this for about 5 months, and loved every minute of it. this motor made about 180 wheel, and ran 12.7 in my buddies 1700lb crx with an ls trans. It was a blast to drive, but it got terrible gas mileage, and my job required me to drive about 75-100 miles a day so I decided to try something a little different, SOHC turbo???
Ended up finding a full y7 swap for next to nothing, and bought all the turbo parts and threw it in there with a little help from k7-trevor. Ended up making about 200 wheel and still got 35.9 mpg in town!
just pulled out of the car and cleaned up a little bit.
Ended up throwing an ebay stage 3 clutch on it along with a y8 trans for better gear ratio.
test fitting turbo manifold and turbo
Motor is in the car, still couple other small things!
all hooked up!
My plan was to build a bottom end for it, as this swap is what's in my car right now, but sadly, the notorious y7 rod knock has come.. lol. WHY ON EARTH DID HONDA DESIGN Y MOTORS TO HAVE SUCH SHITTY OIL FEED DESIGNS? I really don't care that much about it, but I am pissed that all I did was baby it the whole time and it STILL spun a rod bearing lol. Basically although I have the money to build a bottom end I really don't have the ability to not have a car through all the downtime, so instead I am just switching back to b series. I even sold my full swap with turbo kit for $600!
I ended up buying a gsr trans, paid a little more than I wanted to but there was literally NOTHING else to buy, and I bought it from a friend who is about to have a kid so it was nice to help him out. Paid 500 for trans. ill post pics of that later gonna throw in a stage 3 f1 clutch, just like all my other builds lol.
my plan was to buy a jdmb20b from a local motor importer, cost was $750 with a 6mo startup warranty. I had the cash and I hit him up, and he was out of stock! I ended up doing something I normally never do, which is put a deposit with the guys and wait for them to get their next shipment which was like 3 days later. Day 2 rolls around and i get a call from the shop saying that they got shipped the wrong motors, I will have to wait till wed(today) to get the motor. So im like ****, lol hopefully im not getting scammed. I end up calling them today and my motor was there (yay!) drove about an hour and a half and when I get there, I get to choose between four b20 motors (awesome!) I end up finding a 99b20b which is the higher comp one, and you couldnt believe how effing stoked I was as those are hard as hell to find especially when I didnt even ask for one! Just goes to show you that if you pay attention you can find yourself the best deal as I almost forgot to check and just went to the nearest one. Definitely happy!
heres the longblock
I plan on custom building a 3" intake with a velocity stack right behind the front bumper and I also plan to do a Bisimoto v2 header to 2.5in exhaust.
I plan to update this as I go, maybe will be doing a b20vtec but for now I am going to get this motor as dialed in as possible and I really want to just leave the valvecover on and keep it as reliable as possible.
Goals for this motor/car:
150-160 wheel
set up for back country roads
upgrade suspension (one piece coils, sway bar, etc)
get my intake built
install the bisi header
I am picking up b series axles, half shaft, t bracket, starter, and shift linkage tomorrow, and the swap will begin. I will try to take as many pics as I can for you guys
Hope you enjoy! Leave feedback if you would like

Hey man, I feel your pain with 160 views and not a single reply so I wanted to jump in. I love the EG it looked good with rotas, but the konigs are def. less played out!
I love the write up with pictures and the time line of things happening and I wish I was as fortunate as you to swap as many motors with such relative ease in 8 months haha!
Anyways, how did the first B20 pull with the head work/ cams? Pretty strong I'd imagine! Also, I can't believe the SOHC made that much MPG!? Fitting though, me and my buddy had a debate earlier today about stock Saab's and their awesome boosted MPGs haha. It was his justification for boosting his Scion, but that's neither here nor there :x!
That last B20 you scored from the importer is super clean, you got a great deal there! You think the gas mileage will be that much better compared to the first B20?
Let us know how the rest of it comes together!!

Re: My Mild B20 Daily Driver Setup Thread w/lots'o pics!
Gas mileage should be a lot better, when tuning the built b20 we had to add sooooo much fuel even in partial throttle because of the cams and porting. That was the most fun motor I ever had. It would just rip tires off in 2nd when you punched it.
Got my axles today and I also just bought a b16 intake manifold like my last b20. It's a little bit of modding but it's well worth it. I will post pics later. I also plan to run an omni power 70mm throttle body.
Thanks for the nice words guys. It's actually on a set of white ssk's now with extended lug nuts. They are te37 knockoffs but they got the lug position right unlike the rota grids
I'll post pics of trans, and intake manifold install tonight!

Intake manifold is on the car, I plan to do a write up on how to put a b16 intake manifold on a b20 later tonight, i took tons of pics of the process. This is by far the cheapest way to put a nice intake manifold on a b20, and they make great power!
As for the comment of nobody responding to my thread yet, I agree, its lame. I think as the build goes on, more people will become interested, especially with good info on how I am doing what I am doing. There is not that much info on the intake manifold swap.
my goal is to get about 27-30mpg in town, which should be pretty easy with stock cams and some good partial throttle tuning.
Stay tuned for the write up and pictures later tonight.

Yeah the b20 torque is beast if you have axles/mounts to hold up haha. I should of known the damn IM's were interchangeable! I could of done a lot more with my b20 way back when if only I searched harder. I imagine the bolt pattern is the same, what did you have to do to mod it? Just add/extend sensors, and redo the vacuum lines?
Whats your plans with the bigger TB? I figure the more air you receive the more gas you'd need to optimize the power possibilities. You plan on getting bigger injectors or staying stock for MPG purposes?
When you're snapping pics of the IM install, take a couple flashes of her on the new rims! I love your EG, I am not naturally attracted to them as I've been in EKs my whole life but yours has a character that is hard not to like

B20's are nice.

And also if you think i am downgrading, i have a little bit over $300 dollars into this car after all the swaps, i bought a full swap single cam for $150, and i used my b20 as partial payment for the turbo parts, which was the motor that i got for free. So if you think changing it up for free is downgrading, then sure. I saved about $500 on gas in a few short months with this single cam turbo because of how much I drive for work.
this is the first time i have put actual money into this car since i bought it, and this is the motor i plan to keep in it forever, so i was testing different platforms until i found what I want, my favorite was the b20, but I want to, first off, build the motor myself this time, and secondly, do it the way i wanted. I was exploring my possibilities. I dont jack off to my car I could care less if I "downgraded"

If anyone was wondering at how to put a b16 intake manifold onto a b20, heres how to do it.
First things first: Find yourself a b16 intake manifold.
found this locally for 30 bucks.
Secondly: You will need to take off that giant giraffe intake manifold that comes on the b20. this is simple, look for the bolts and brackets that hold it on, and then remove them.
pic of the stock b20 intake manifold, effin massive!
Heres a pic of the knock sensor plug that will only be found on a high compression b20 for reference.
B20 intake manifold has been removed you can use the throttlebody off of it along with other things like injectors and map sensor and so on. I couldn't use this fuel rail because it was from a rhd car and the fuel feed was on the wrong side.
Next step is to begin removing the old gasket from the head of the motor. This is BY FAR the worst step in the process. There are two ways to do this, one: razor blade, time consuming, but a lot harder to mess up. And two: a dremel with a flapper wheel, which is much faster, but you have to be careful as if you take off too much the head will have to take a trip to the local machine shop!
Razor blade, hands still hurt from this...
Dremel for the win!!
Almost all the way cleaned off
This is the attachment I used on the end of the dremel
The next pictures will be comparing the port right by the thermostat on the intake manifold, some coolant line, and yes you need it, but the b16 one differs from the b20 one.
Reference pic of b20
Roughly what you need to shave/cut to make the b16 manifold fit
This is the main problem people run into when trying to make these intake manifolds fit, you have to shave off that coolant port on the b16 intake manifold, and then go to a connectors store and purchase a 3/4" barbed push male to male fitting. and you have to shave off A LOT. this is also not a fun part as it is super awkward to chop off. you need to make it able to clear the port and then some because the new fitting needs to also be able to fit in there with the intake manifold on.
Another pic of the shaving. I used a cutting wheel. which I hate using cuz its hard to make it pretty, at least for me that is, but it really is the best way to get that extra piece off.
Here is another reference pic of the port I am talking about. this would normally be covered up by the intake manifold and would have a place to put a coolant line. This is close to how much room you will need to make this work.
The next main issue with making this manifold fit is an alan head bolt that hangs out right where the middle stud on top would go if it was a b16 motor. basically this is super simple to fix, you just get a step bit and drill the hole out a little bigger, this is also one of the two bolts that will not be replaced when putting the intake manifold back on, because well, there is no bolt hole for this one!
Reference pics:
Alan head
Hole that needs to be drilled out, just a little bit, only enough to clear the bolt.
Now you're almost done!
go buy yourself a b20 or ls intake manifold gasket, doesnt really matter which, and slap that on there MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN BOTH THE HEAD AND INTAKE MANIFOLD OF PREVIOUS GASKET OR YOU RISK CRACKING YOUR INTAKE MANIFOLD!!! It can also lead to vacuum leaks and what not.
Top of it should look like this, Not all bolt holes are filled, but thats how its gotta be if you want this on your motor.
Here's the bottom, you are missing one on bottom too because you chopped it off as it would be on the other side of that coolant port.
And there you have it! b16 intake manifold on a b20. This is the second time I've done this and I know it works and it makes much better power than using an ls manifold, and they are usually the same price! i think they also look much nicer in the engine bay.
Hopefully some other guys try this out as its a much cheaper replacement than buying a skunk2 mani or whatever other manifold you wanna run.

Bisimoto.. LOL Thats one header i would stay clear from. Considering the amount of midrange cars lose specially reving to 8,9, even 10k.. this setup will be ALL about midrange.. I suggest a typical tube header, like a hytech rep, RMF rep or if you want something really custom, Check out Myers Manifolds or Danny Tran from SSR.

My car is now too low to use a hytech rep, but i love that header! I have been thinking about the rmf narrows, and that will most likely be the header i end up with. I looked a little bit more into the bisi header, and all it really does is look cool... lol

here's a pic of the b16 intake manifold installed on the motor. Still need to find a fuel rail. I plan to run stock injectors as I'm only gonna be making 170 wheel max. It will most likely be more around 150-160 wheel, and stock injectors should be plenty

But after all this work with the B20, I'm starting to finally understand what you're trying to do here, so at least you've stayed the course on this one. Good luck to you..

I do wish I would have stuck with the original b20, but this one is higher compression than the last one I had, and will give me a better platform to do what I did last time, except this time I get to build it myself. I really did like the crower cams, but I think this time around I am going to to a vtec head to have that extra power, while also maintaining good mpgs.
But what are you gonna do, the past is the past, and I already have my new swap, with a better trans, a better longblock, and a much nicer intake. And the turbo kit is gonna pay for my motor when I sell it. with this new swap I will be about $450 out of pocket for full b-series swap w gsr trans.

I can understand that viewpoint, but I was PLANNING on having this be my bread and butter, sticking with single cam turbo, building a bottom end, and going for 400hp, but now that my only shortblock is on its way out cuz its spinning a bearing, I have the money to build a bottom end but not the ability to have my car not running for 2-3 weeks as i use it for my job.

I've been debating on whether or not I want to turbo my b16a2 or if I want to swap and do a b20 swap. I like the idea of a turbo but the more I think about it the more I'm beginning to realize it will more reliable to run a b20. Couple questions though. I know you went with the gsr tranny but given the circumstances would you have done it with a b16a2 tranny? The reason I ask is because when I bought mine it already had the quaife lsd installed and I'm a little loath to part with it.
My other question is how hard is it, really, to swap in the b16 head? I've heard some horror stories from a few people and I'm not sure if I can sacrafice that kind of downtime(and the headaches with it) if problems do arise. Thoughts?

Wow from a ****ed up LS-V to a nice strong all motor B20 that with 180WHP is a nice setup as a daily. Should have left it right there and just driven it. Then doing a major down grade to a D16Y7 one of the all time crappy and internally weakest D motor ever and slapping a Ebay crap turbo on it....epic fail in any case. Now you are going back to a B20 all motor that is not as nice as the last B20 you had. What is the point and goal of all this, just seems like suck a waste of time and money. Pick a platform and have a goal.

Firstly, if you want a daily driver car you hardly ever have to mess with, your best bet is n/a. Turbo cars require much more maintenance than an n/a car, plus, I personally dislike b16's but a turbo one would be a lot of fun.
To the second question, the only reason I went with a gsr trans was because I found a gsr trans first for the right price. I also bought it from someone I know so I know its not garbage. b16 was my first choice though, I had a full hmotorsonline 99spec b16b swap a while back with a ctr trans, and I wish all trannys were that short haha! also the quaife will be badass. You cant go wrong with a b16 trans with n/a because its a lot harder to run out of gears with less power. if you were to turbo, you may run into that problem if you plan on tracking it. My buddy ran out of gears before the 1/4 mile with his ls turbo that ran 11.50's because his tranny was too short.
Lastly, swapping a b16 head basically requires a new head gasket, little bit of machine work, an oil line and a couple of fittings, and some other bs. If you know how to do a headgasket and dont run into any problems, it is easily a 3-5 hour job.

I agree I should have stuck with the first b20, as it was a solid motor setup, but I wanna build my own, and a little bit different than how that one was put together. Also money isn't an issue, I really don't give a **** if I spend some money messing around. I like working on my cars, and now I know 100% what I want in my car and how I am going to get it there.
I have the ability to do it myself instead of read all you idiots give biased shitty opinions on what you liked or didn't like. That's my two cents.. haters lol.

*****UPDATE******
Finally got the fitting for the coolant port.
I JB welded it to make sure it wouldn't leak, shouldnt have any problems.
Put the motor and trans together
Got everything else put together, motor is now bolted in the car only reason I stopped for the night is my friend is an ******* and flaked on bringing my alternator over, so its pointless to put the axles in and make it harder to install it. I also was just tired as hell.
should be done tomorrow afternoon, I will have more pics then!
All that's left:
1) Alternator
2) Axles
3) Plug wiring harness back in
4) build my intake
5) quick street tune.
I will leave it like that until I get my new suspension which I should be ordering next week.
then the decision on a header will be after that.
