how strong/ durable is the 97mm F23 crank?
 
Like the title says i am wondering just how strong and durable a f23's 97mm crankshaft is. I plan on using it in a h2b setup and want to know if i can trust a used f23 crank or if i should get a brand new one from honda?

are these cranks prone to often spinning rods or even breaking under high stress?

its just as strong as any h22 crank...honda cranks are forged...the high stroke is what breaks parts since bigger strokes are meant for low rpms..but if you build it i should hold..

It has the 55mm mains which are the bigger ones as far as h series and f series cranks go . I cant remember if the rod bearings were k series or b series but either way nobody has any problem making high hp on that size rod bearings as long as you buy rods . Dont try to run the stock rods . Im currently building a 300hp all motor build with a f23 crank crower rods . The only company that makes f23 rods is crower which are 860 dolllars thats why nobody runs this crank lol. There is a company on ebay making nice rods for f23 and h23 motors now for 250 bucks. Ive used them several times no problems at all there actually really nice and lighter then my crower rods .

geeez... Any V8 engines with similar dimensions that could be modified to work?

If i had it to do over again i would buy the rods off ebay ive ran them in several motors there very nice and only 250 dollars.

Only semi weak point i've heard of is the f23 rod journals are very narrow, limiting bearing surface area. But other then that it's a typically beefy ass forged honda crank:)

Honda uses the same bearing on one of the K20Z motors. All K rod journals have narrower bearings than that of the B/H. Nothing wrong with them. Honda knows best.

Also, if this isn't something you aren't pushing to it's limits any of the stock OEM H/F rods are adequate for a street/strip engine... even the F23. Heavier rods in an all motor setup, your just going backwards.

The F23 rods are 141mm long, 19.8mm wide oddballs. Nothing similar.

I had 60,000 miles on my old F23 cranked engine, >2000 of which were from roadracing making 183wtq. All rod journals looked great on teardown. The new engine's got 15,000 miles so far and makes 191wtq on F23 crank.

Seems stong enough for NA, just use good oil and keep the pressure up.

when i bought the rods crower were the only ones that sold them so there were no option of a lighter rod . Even if they had the rods on ebay back then i wouldnt have bought them for my motor trying to push 300 hp not worth the chance when i know nothing about the rods. Now that i have built several customers motors with no problem i would feel fine running them . There not that much lighter . I tried for six months to get some rods built nobody would do it then i found mine for 500 brand new so i bought them.

Probably not...... and there is probably a reasonable explanation for it! 1. You can only sucker people into buying cheap crap for so long before they notice that it's crap. Or 2. It was a limited run of rods someone produced and they were trying to offload them quick. Probably cheaper becuase the demand wasn't as big as they thought it would be and they were collecting dust on a shelf!

over on race eng parts site there are couple choice's for oem lenght stell f23 rods at decent prices around 400-600bucks and they also have the crowers...f20jones has used some of the race eng ones with good sucess and found them to be lighter than the crower rods that really beefy more of a turbo oriented rod

OP, Thought about going with an aluminum rod? From your build post it doesn't seem like you are building a DD. Give 4piston a call, they seem to sell a nice light GRP rod to their spec that will price out about the same as the crower butat half the weight.

went with a carillo light weight rod, the aluminum rod requires additional work and such

In fact, if you buy rods and pistons together, you get a discount and can get both for just under a grand.
