Honda B eng Dry Sump setup - oil drainback
I have a question on setting up a dry sump system for a Honda B engine to be used for land speed racing.
I want to use a dry sump, and also I am making a crank scraper. I am concerned about oil drainback from the head.
I have heard something about putting an oil scavenge line in the head to collect return oil, but where?
It looks like there are 5 places where oil drains by gravity through the head to the block below, mostly falling right on top of the spinning crank.
I was thinking of tapping and plugging those oil drainback holes in the head from chamber side, then drilling and tapping holes through the outside of the head (sideways) and using 5 separate 6AN lines back to a baffled point in the pan, with a scavenge line nearby (not directly attached).
Any ideas? How do other people remove the oil from the head?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Honda B eng Dry Sump setup - oil drainback
if you have a 4-5 stage pump
then yeah you can add pick up points in the head separate from the block
you can also use the back side freeze plug location of the block (where most use for breather loc) of a suction spot..
all depending on application/use
but seeing youre landspeed.. then that spot might work good (constant acceleration)
just make sure to run a good sized tank that helps airate the oil or rid of foam

I have a 3 stage pump right now. I was going to use one suction in the pan, and a second one in the pan area, near where the individual drains from the head would be. Only a small percentage of the oil from the head is accessable from the area of that big vent hole.
I have a 5 gallon Peterson tank for de-aerating. A bit big, but I got a good deal on it complete with mounts and heaters.

Re: Honda B eng Dry Sump setup - oil drainback
sounds good.. on the 3stage pump
so one at the oilpan (strategically positioned to where it works for ur app)
the 2nd suction... as you say in the pan area near where the individual drain is from the head
- the position i mentioned at the back of the block is that tunnel.. removing the freeze plug and putting an AN fitting there for the drysump pump.. (where most add an extra vent hole) will be good since you're sucking alot closer to the head
and that drainback (intake side) of the head would almost have more oil draining
versus the front (during ur operation = accelerating to top speed)
good stuff you got a few pictures we can drool over? hehe

I have been looking at the head and my parts, and I think what I am going to do is tap and plug the oil holes in the head from the gasket surface, and then drill and tap the side of the head where those channels are, and run 6an fittings/hose to the pan near the pickup for the 2 scavenge sections. This would bypass all oil drainback from the head.
