It can kinda go both ways...
The dowel pins sole purpose is to line things up right?
Engines to trannys...
Blocks to heads...
cam caps to cylinder heads...
So by some small chance that you got the parts lined up perfectly, you just did the dowel pins job right?
Now clamp that thing down with 10 bolts each torqued to ~80 ft lbs and you got roughly about 800 lbs of clamping force right???
I think we can all agree you should definately put them in, and its always better to be safe than sorry...BUT...
Would it work???
Would the HG blow???
Can you shift the head at all with just studs or head bolts???
Hmmmmmm.....

that small chance is not likely to happen, not impossible but almost impossible.

You absolutely need them! Your head gasket will not be properly aligned. You will leak coolant, and oil. Also your gasket will be in your cylinder and gradually burn the gasket material. Can cause overheating, leaking, blow by, and loss of compression. If it does not have these symptoms right away it will be there within a 1000 miles. You can also burn your valves and detonate your motor if you continue to run the motor, just go get the factory gasket. If motor was not ran go get copper coat and reuse the gasket you have with the spray on copper coat.... Best of luck with the build!

For those that are wondering if it works it will for a little while if you have built motors b4 and do things right but not recommended. I had a motor go 5k miles without them. in my fully built high compression boosted B20B once it warmed up fully it ran lean. it didn't seat right between the cylinders, it also burned coolant. Just get the $5 pins lol.
It ran great til about 2400miles then started acting up.
