My suggestion is don't build a single especially if you have the option to go for a B-series.Would be way easier to get 300-350hp with a b-series.

I have about 3000 just trying to get an idea of what I'm able to do with it to get the best bang for my buck. I'm use to v8 is.300 Hp a little to much for a street car/track car

browse through all motor dyno post adn note the 1/4 mile times with those motors.
and then go to boosted section and see what power vs 1/4 mile times they have. that should give you an idea about what you want to do.
1500-2500 will get you a gsr with boltons and tune will be around 170-180WHP
3000-5000 will get you a jdm itr or usdm itr motor with tune can be between 180-205WHP
b20vtec could be a bit more power for 2000-3000gs but it has to be built and have the pars that work together best.
if you do want to build it take my advice( from experience lol) and find a setup that is within your budget and has the power that you want and copy it.nothing wrong with that to do your first uild that way you know what is what.

unless he can get it within his 3000 budget
you will be disapointed with a single cam.
and possibly surprised that a gsr or ITR can keep up with a good amount of american backyard built so called muscle cars (which are equivalent of riceburner hondas that are also built in the backyard with no proper tools or tune)
probably not gonna get close to properly built american cars tho unless they cant drive...
theres a guy here with a gsr that pushed it into high 12s
and plenty of other great builds to look at just take few weeks to browse through before making any kind of fast and furious part buying decisions.

Re: d16y8 worth buliding or build a bseires motor
Listen to Raver, he has a lot of useful info. If I were on your 3000$ budget I would find myself a nice GSR swap and build the head correctly, leaving the block stock assuming it is healthy. If done right you could see 195~210 whp or mid to high 12s 1/4 mile if its in a half way light chassis. You can go about your build however you want, but in the end this was a very cost effective way for me to get good power.
