I have a 98 Civic HX (stock) with 82,000 mile on it. What's the best oil/engine additive that you'd recommend to keep the engine at its optimum and running for a long, long time?

Royal Purple full synthetic & Mobil-1 oil filter (can get it all a PepBoys). Oil changes twice a year, and your good to go for a long long time...

I would just use standard 5w30 oil, & a factory filter. Just change the oil every 1500 to 2000 miles. I have taken apart many engines with over 200,000 miles, & they looked amazing inside because the people changed their oil reguarly.

I didn't see Amsoil in there.

I use Mobil 1 in all my street cars and change it every 3000 miles. No compliants.

I noticed that also. I surprised considering that was one of the 3 leading brands of synthetic. Royal Purple & Redline being the other two (in my mind anyways)...

I really like Amsoil, but its not the easiest stuff to find in stores.

Change out your oil according to factory service intervals and you will be good.
Royal Purple is an exellent synthetic that you can buy from local parts store. Mobil one is over hyped, even the cheap o Walmart Supertech non-synthetic and brand x synthetic blend performs the same or better on the bearing test. But, putting synthetic into a daily driven car is over kill in my opinion. Remember, oil doesn't wear out its the additives that does.

oil is oil. all this **** about it is stupid, these rumors were started by the oil companies to make more money. oil never goes bad (conventional or synthetic) it just gets dirty and needs to be changed.

Do you have proof of this claim?

Why does MB use Mobil1 0w-40 on the ML55AMG, E55DAMG, CLK430...hell all MB cars use Mobil 1 straight from the factory. Why don't they use some cheapo oil if it is all the same? Keep in mind, that while the MB is under warranty, the consumer does NOT pay for the oil change. So its not like MB is making $$ off of me by requiring Mobil 1. Explain...

I have heard this as well, but my personal experience says otherwise. I switched my 89 CRX Si over to Full synthentic at about 190k miles. 10k miles later, the engine doesn't loose a single drop onto the ground (only A/C comperssor oil). Of course it still burns the motor oil at the same rate...

Oil is not oil i know that fully synthetic oil is formulated so that the molecules are evenly sized. In conventional oil they are not formulated to be that way. Think of a bunch of marbles and rub your hand over them. If they are all different sizes and shapes (conventional oil) your hand will not slide over them as well. Now get all evenly sized marble and slide your hand over them and it moves more smoothly. That is synthetic. Also it is true that oil does not loose its ability to lubricate BUT over time the additves go away creating sludge and also causeing more corrosion in the crankcase from moisture.

But how much better is synthetic than conventional oil when changed regularly ? No one will ever agree on that

your an idiot. TBN is universal to each service rating of oil, i guess i should have spelled it out for you. automotive grade oil falls within 7-10mg KOH/g. Have YOU ever heard of tbn? I love these *** holes on HT that dont explain anything, they just call people names and have 6000+ posts. that must have taken some real effort to be such an *** so many times.

back in like the seventies the us government mandated that oil refineries needed to make oils interchangeable that are the same viscosity and service. there may be a difference in molecule size, but that isnt gonna make an oil last longer.

i may have been wrong about saying that oil is oil, but what i was trying to say is that with regular oil changes (when the oil is dirty, not at 3000 mi) the conventional oil is absoluty fine because it doesnt lose its lubricity it just loses it ability to suspend wear causing particals, ie: its dirty

Because they want you to feel that you are getting your money's worth. Honestly if MB told you that your car will run fine with wal-mart oil will you let them put it in? It's all about image. They want you to feel that you are being treated as god so you will come back and buy/lease another car from them in the future. Simple as that. Also don't forget Mercedes has a race team that gets sponosored by these so call oil company.

Edit: Mercedes no longer have free maintenance, oil changes cost money on newer purchases.

I would use AutoRX. Search for it on bobistheoilguy. There's plenty of documentation on its effects.

Or there is a possibility, that as they are Warranting thier products they want the best products in it. Once the warranty is over, they could care if you use Wal-Mart oil. There is a differance in oils.
