Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
Oh, stop it.. I just posted a perfectly good engine build not 4 posts ago that didn't fall into that same category that you just stated, in a way that even YOU wouldn't get bent-outta-shape over, which did not use my specific brand of parts components; for the simple fact that MY tastes don't equate everyones. I posted that based upon MY opinion and experience. I know that not everyone can digest it, Hence why I didn't suggest something that I would do to equate to something the OP would be able to do.
Now you're just picking a fight to pick a fight in the name of economics...Don't do that.. don't stoop to that level. we're just talking here.. my goodness..
Now let's be done with this, and let the young guy do what he plans to do and be cool again. whadoyasay?

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
Regardless, I am continously reminded by the amaranthine banter, that the All Motor and Forced Induction forums are filled with more arguments over STUPID things than Technical Information. (How is that for a mild run-on?)
Given, with questions that have endless answers that are all correct in their own way (also known as an Opinion for those who don't understand), it's hard for there not to be arguments. Let us just all agree that there are too many variables to make a decision; this is the OP's decision after all.
So OP - You need to decide a plethora of things:
Are you going to build something that pleases "The Shodan", "Spawne32", or YOURSELF? Will you settle for cheap quality or even "proven" knock offs/lesser quality parts? Will you go all out and buy for name brand alone with Form over Function? Will you plan the entire build, mixing and matching parts? Will you purchase most of the same brand name parts and slap them together? The list goes on and on....
(Now I will sit in the shadows and watch for the never ending "Is 'this' part better than 'that' part?" threads.)

OK, I won't sell my setup then.
But seriously, to the OP, please keep us up to date because we would like to know what you end up deciding. My advice would be to try to find a good deal. Like that ITR engine for 2500, I found all of this for $1500:
ERL sleeved block, B18B
Crower rods, springs/retainers
Crower Cams 62402T
ARP Headstuds
JE 81.5mm pistons
AEM fuel rail with gauge
AEM fpr
Ramhorn, full race
T3/T4, ballbearing turbo
3” downpipe
Tial wastegate
Greddy Profec B stage 2 electronic boost controller
b18b transmission w/LSD and ACT extreme PP.
Hasport motor mount kit.
Thermal R&D 3" turbo exhaust
And I didn't even install half this stuff. I already had an LS-T setup on my car, and all I really needed was the block.
If you can find a similar deal on the type of setup you want, you will be able to come in way under budget. Good luck!

^^^ On a same kind of note... If you spend most of your time searching and buying parts on here and craigslist, you could make a beast for 4-5k.
I'm about halfway with parts bought/saved up for my LSV build (forged internals/build head) and at this rate, I'm only looking at spending $1,600 tops on a built engine, thanks to the marketplace here.

The Shodan's build is built with reliability in mind. Same as I could have used a B20 block for my NA build and instead got my GSR sleeved by Benson. For 5K max power would be with a D16Z6 using forged rods, forged pistons, headstuds, Treadstone turbo kit, set of 550 injectors, walbro fuel pump, and get it tuned. The majority of the work would have to be done by you though.

Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
bringing thread back to life since a lot has changed since 2012. what do you guys think for 5k all in w/ no prior build experience (meaning needing to pay for all labor)

Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
Not much has changed since then actually. A few new parts in the market but for the most part you are screwed. You need to take your time, call around for shop rates, and figure out exactly what you can afford rather than getting these sweet dreams of something awesome. Then there is the factor of a tune. Maybe saving your tax refund check and adding some more money on top of it down the road would be a better choice?

Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
Machine work- $700
B20 block, crank, rods w/ arp and pistons- $400
Cams-$700
Head work (cost of GSR head, built w/ aftermarket stuff, machined and with VJ) $1500
Header-$500
Tranny- B16- $900- installed carbon gears, 4.7FD and LSD was another $700
That's just the bare bones and you see how quickly it adds up.

5k budget. ..
I'd do an H2B. Leave the bottom end stock. Especially if you can get a jdm engine which I believe have more compression.
Aftermarket cams and springs. Then a tune...
Wait for good deals.
You could have a very nice setup for 5k if you play your cards right.
But yeah not much has changed..

Re: best engine/build for 5grand max
When I had a stock B18CR in my CRX on slicks I still got beat by SRT4's almost every time. I decided to see what 10K could do with a CRX on my current build. We will know in a couple months.
