Default B16B Step-by-step instruction guidance: B16B/Austin-Mini Project

Hi,

My background is "IM NEW". Ive taken on the complete restoration of a Classic Austin mini.

Shes in primer now and before making the engine Fit Id like to bench run it before jamming it into the small car.

Ive done research on a bench run but I could use some guidance from someone who has done a bench run with one of these before.

The engine and tranny will sit in the subframe designed to hold a B series and mate with an Austin mini. Ill have fuel to the engine with battery. Im confused about how the wiring from the dizzy coil works in relationship to the starter. I do know the starter hits the positive lead from the battery. Not sure if its the same for the dizzy.

Will the engine start even if there is no ECU? Just having bought it yet.

I looked high and low to find a guide out there but Ive come up short.

Thanks.

Dave

if i clearly saw it, your ar planning to install b series engine to the mini?

If yes, b series engine must have his ECU in orfer to start. You can work an EFI engine without ingectors (ie with bike carbs) but you should keep the ignition and ecu from the b series engine (you want also to keep the v-tec)

Thanks Turbo,

I guess the title is mis leading.

You are correct. Im doing a B16B in a classic mini. Its been done many times so I have no issues there. Lots of guidance.

I will of course keep ECU and VTEC.

I want to understand how to bench run that before I try and squeeze that engine in there.

Dave.

i have never done this kind of swap but if i had to do something like this i would probably got used mounts from other mini - vtec project before trying to built new ones. If you get the mounts (or make a copy) out of a working project the rest should be less difficult.

The mini and vtec design is a well established community. No problem with mounts.

As it sits I just want to know how to bench run the car.

Need gas obviously and thats not a problem. ECU no issues there. Battery to the started motor but I am missing something to get it to turn over.

Again Im not a car guy. I did this to learn many aspects of restoration.

Thanks.

Dave

I am sure you will find a way out doing everything. I can't even imagine what that thing is going to do if you add a turbocharger. Nice built!

How did you go Dave, did you find any info. Interested to know as I’m about to do the same thing (B16B into a Leyland clubman). I got the engine with all wiring but no ECU and was wondering the same thing, how wire it to bench test and do I stick to factory ecu.
I found minitec sells ecu’s to suit mini mods.
B AND D ECU'S
They also sell harness as well and there is some install info, that could be of help.
