3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
I know the topic of mufflers has been covered over and over. But I was wondering if a 3 in performance chambered muffler would flow almost as much as a 2.5 in straight through muffler. An if a 3 in chambered muffler would still be quieter than a 2.5 in straight through.
If I lose HP really how much am I going to lose with a 3 in chambered? Has anyone ever tested this on a all motor car. I've seen turbo car lose huge amounts. Seems like people usually run a 2.5 in chambered? Why not step it up to 3 in chambered to see if its still quite and flows better? I have gone through a number of exhaust and just tired with lots of different set ups and thinking of just going with a chambered muffler. Had a N1 knock off exhaust way to loud knock off twin loop muffler (snl twin loop) with a 30 in resonator (eventually started getting loud) Currently running a DMH electric cut out into a stock muffler. I make 165 whp cut out closed and 187 whp cut out open. But I'm just tired for breaking the cut out and the constant exhaust leaks from the cut out. And even though the outside noise is quite when the cut out is closed the turbulence the y pipe makes right under me creates a huge amount of cabin noise. So just wondering if I should go on to a 3 in chambered muffler on my set up? 83 mm sleeved Ls block 9:1 compression (its set up for turbo just running all motor for prolly 6 more months) B16 head stock port knock of tri y header DMH e cut out 2.5 in piping with one resonator into a stock gsr muffler Thanks sorry for the long post |

Anyone use any of these chambered mufflers?

Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
im kinda in the same boat your are , i want performance and i want a good sound , well i went with pace headers followed by 3in all the way then put a silverline muff on . i really like the sound and the performance is great hope this healped

Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
There are a few tests on the American Iron forums that have muffler comparisons complete with Dynos, CFM, and Decible ratings. I used some of this info to help me settle on a 3" Borla XS. Not exactly ricer specs but it may help you with the decision.
Google "Muffler CFM" |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
if you use a chambered muffler make sure the inlet and outlet are the same size on the inside of the inlet and outlet pipe if that makes sense.
i worked at a factory that made a couple of namebrand muscle car mufflers and the inside of the inlet and outlet would be smaller. for example some of the 2 1/5 inlet and oulets would be as small a 2" on the inside as well as the chamber tubes inside the muffler. also the the 3" would be as small as 2 1/4 on the inside as well as the tubing. there a good design just check you make sure your getting the advertised piping size throughout the muffler |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
i just bought the new dynomax muffler. The VT line. Has a valve inside so as the pressure increases it opens more to allow more flow. But if your cruising its quiet. Its on backorder from summit so i cant comment yet about it but there also is a $25 rebate so it runs you about 75 bucks for the muffler which is Stainless.

Google "Muffler CFM" did you have the link for the american iron forums I looked a bit but couldn't find it. Is the borla really that quiet though I've heard they were kinda loud. I'm looking for like a little over stock loud. Can't deal with getting a state ref ticket here in CA. Plus I'm going to paint the exhaust black when I get it anyways so i don't really need anything that looks nice. Anyone have dyno on a Honda of switching from a straight through 2.5 in muffler to a performance chambered muffler? O and for 1.5slowmatic tell me how that dynomax muffler goes the concept is kinda similar to varex or a e cut out but it super cheap. Basically i don't car if i lose 1-8 whp but looking for the quietest exhaust possible stock quiet would be great and how the muffler looks don't matter. But if i'm losing 10-15 whp thats a little different and it is possible since i'm losing 22 whp with my cut out closed on my stock muffler. Thanks for all the posts. |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
well summit sent me a card pushing the date back 10 more days dammit. i want it on for cruisin weekend over here. there are no vids on youtube yet probably because no one can get em or has ordered them. It has a lifetime warranty on the spring so if it ever stops working it gets replaced. Im gonna be running it in a 2.25in system with a 25in cherry bomb and probably a 2.5in resonated test pipe and an edelbrock header. im hoping for nice and deep and if im really on it maybe a some sound but more so just being deep. These come in 2.5 or 3in so you can choose either one. And if your plannin to go turbo go 3in without a doubt. The more resonators the quieter/deepr it will be

I was just wondering if a 3inch chambered would flow similiar numbers to a 2.5 inch straight through although its chambered it has a larger area to flow. Anyways tell me when you get the muffler Thanks |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
yeh in for the dynomax VT muffler review also. Sounds like a good idea. In fact I think some evo's have this valve design as oem.
You would think they would put a video on their site as a comparison, cruising or accelerating. |

I believe OBX makes a copy of the Twin Loop that is cheaper.
. I posted the exhaust systems i've gone through. in the first post. Thanks though tried it it sounds pretty good even with the sound deadening blown out just still kind of loud. And I actually got pulled over with my snl twin loop and got a state ref damn California cops and regulations. |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
meant to add, the longevity of that moroso muffler is not that good. the welds will break and than your SOL. i would avoid them. Until i get my VT muffler i recommend maganflow/borla/vibrant with resonators. Straight through and quiet. Im really hoping i get the best of both worlds with this new muffler though

Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
i had a 3-chamber dynomax super turbo muffler 3" in and out. it was pretty quiet. it made 440whp@20-21psi last year....but after loosing a set of pistons shortly after i had to change the exhaust setup. it was generating to much heat and killing the engine especially after a certain power level. i would say 300-325whp is the max you can run thru that muffler safely.
this year i switched to the xforce varex 3" muffler. the price scared me at first but after i got it installed it was worth every penny IMO. with the cutout closed it's STOCK quiet. literally you hear nothing but the engine. when it's open it sounds awesome and even quieter than the chambered muffler i had on before. with just the muffler change and the cutout open this year it made 443whp@16psi.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyCKij30TIY |

yah both obx and a company called snl make a twin loop. The cheaper twin loops are quiet for about 3 months. Then they start to get loud. I know I had a SNL twin loop with a 30 in resonator. An After about three 3 months it got pretty loud after the sound deadening material doesn't work as much anymore.

Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
I've repacked a snl muffler with motorcycle muffler packing worked well.
|
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
sorry no experience with the obx twin loop but my snl started sounding loud after about three months or so. To lazy to repack it lol.
Yah I looked at the varex muffler for a while it looks real nice. How much did you pick yours up for? |
Re: 3 in chambered muffler vs 2.5 in Straight thru
the varex muffler is kinda pricey but when you factor in the cost of building a custom exhaust and if you want to add in a cutout and all the extra labour/piping it's about the same costs in the end....
