Does TSX have transmission problems like Accord and TL?
Hi all. I'm in the market for a sporty sedan and I've spent a lot of time researching various models. I decided to abandon a number of candidate models from Honda/Acura due to their long track record of bad transmissions (Honda has finally abandoned their auto transmission design in favour of CVT with the 2013 Accord, after 15 years of problems starting with 1998 Accord).
My question: does the Gen 1 TSX (04 to 08) share the same transmission as the Accord (either AT or MT)? It appears not, but despite considerable searching I have not been able to confirm precisely what the differences are between the TSX and Accord in terms of powertrain, or more generally.
Having read so many horror stories of Accord/TL/Odyssey transmission failures, I'm determined not to be another victim!
Any information and relevant links explaining this would be much appreciated. If the TSX does not have a "glass tranny" then I just might have found the perfect candidate!
Thanks,
ND

Hmmm...unfortunately there are some indications of TSX transmission problems after all...

For anyone technically minded, the following explains in relatively simple terms what the basic design problem is with Honda's automatic transmissions...it also confirms that problems apply to both 4 and 6 cyl engines, which is why I am cautious about the TSX...

There was talk of a class-action lawsuit over these trannies...

Again, any information on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Every car suffers from failures. Some are design flaw, others are driver neglect/error. In the case of the TSX auto it is nothing like that of the Odyssey/MDX/Accord/TL/CL transmissions. They are very reliable.
Have some failed? Yes, of course. Some manuals failed as well. Nothing is perfect. For the most part with good maintainance they should last with no issues. My father has an 05 Auto with 110k. I think the dealer changed the fluid 2x.. I then got my hands on a case of the new DW-1 fluid and did the 3x3 change. When removing the magnetic drain plug there was MINIMAL flakes on the plug.
Any other car I have owned always had more. These trannies seem to be built very well. When purchasing ask for service records, look at the fluid yourself and see what condition it's in.

Agreed - there will always be the occasional failed transmission on any car. What's interesting is that the TSX does not seem to have the history of transmission failures that other Honda/Acura models definitely do -- even though it appears to share the Accord transmission. That's what I don't understand and was hoping someone could elaborate on.
It'll be interesting to see whether Acura also goes with a CVT transmission for their next generation....

my 04 trans blew but we bought the car used with 70k on it so who knows what kind of driving was done before we owned it, and it blew around 150K (MT). I am more worried with oil consumption rather than transmission issues

WOW, a MT tranny that failed. I bet it had to do with not changing out the MTF and grinding some gears.
I have 192,600 on my 98 Civic auto original tranny. All is good with it. I did the 3x3 change and then some. Fluid is red.
