Default Swapping out auto transmissions

Thinking about trading for a 04 TL, that has a "bad transmission", cones with a replacement. Seller says it'll run fine, shift through gears for a few blocks, and then will suddenly start slipping. Turn the car off for a minute, and it'll run for a block and do the same.

Does this sound like a bad transmission? Torque converter?

What's the best way to remove the transmission at home? Can you unbolt, and drop it out the bottom like a d/b series Honda? My apologies if there is a diy transmission removal thread, couldn't find one. Thanks!
