Sounds like it's low on coolant. This could be due to a leak or a headgasket issue. It's more likely a leaking hose, rent a coolant system pressure test kit from Advance Auto or somewhere similar and find and replace the culprit.

Then fill and burp the cooling system, just google how to do that, and you should be good to go.
