Is the Acura 1.6 EL legal in the US?
I saw one of these for the first time ever out on the road today, it looks cool. Would be even cooler with an LS engine in it. Is it possible to bring one of these into the US legally?

Seriously, if you have a '98 Civic LX you're halfway there, all the EL is is a Civic with Leather... all you need is the front clip (bumper, lights, fenders, grille and hood) and a rear bumper and trunk and your car will look like a EL. I see that stuff for sale on the boards up here all the time. You can get the leather interior too. Try the for sale forums on torontocivics.com or the canadian forum on clubsi.
A guy at my work has a sweet 7g Si (Ex in US)coupe with the current EL front clip, looks great. Another guy has a nice EK hatch with the previous EL (like mine) front clip on it.
Here's some pics of my old one

The 1.6 EL also has a 127 HP, 1.6 liter SOCH VTEC engine. It's not the Civic EX engine I guess, the little bit of info I've found on it says it's "slightly different", but didn't tell me what is different. How much HP is a USDM Civic EX engine?

I see the same one driving locally here in Georgia all the time, i've seen him going to and from work in traffic for probobly 2-3 years so yeah, since it's got updated tags, im guessing its legal. (and its bone stock, so im guessing its not a civic with the body panels changed and stuff, older guy drives it).

Re: Is the Acura 1.6 EL legal in the US? (hypnosisracing)
The one I saw had Quebec plates, it was in Concord, N.H. when I saw it.
The only things I can think of that would pose a problem would be safety features/crash test compliance, and emmissions levels for its model year. I'm pretty sure exterior lighting would be the same or close enough to US laws that they wouldn't be an issue when passing an inspection. Unfortunatley, this year is the first year Nw Hampshire will begin actually testing cars for emmissions, so that's something I need to be concerned about now. It used to be just a visual inspection, now it costs $75 to get an inspection because of the emmisions testing BS, it used to be $20-$25. 90% of the air pollution in N.H. blows in from the states west of us, PA, NY/NJ and Mass. mainly...thanks guys!

I think it would be legal to have an EL in the states. I see a lot of them down here. They are all from Canada. I don't think there are any model cars sold in Canada that don't pass US safety regulations.

There's a guy by my work that has one with Wisconsin plates on it. Hell, there's a guy in Milwaukee with an early 1990s Volkswagen Polo, too. I suppose as long as the paperwork checks out, you're okay.

Re: Is the Acura 1.6 EL legal in the US? (Paperchaser)
I had mine down in Daytona for Spring Break a couple of times and couldn't believe the attention it got (if you've been to Spring Break you know that's no easy feat) people were perplexed. I'm going down to Florida again in May with my new '05 EL and am ready to answer tons of questions again.
It's funny, the EL is almost cheaper here right now, because the new model Civic (and EL) are coming the interest rates have dropped. So right now the EL is at 2.8% but the Civic is at 4.9%.
A manual EL Touring is only about $1100 more than our Civic Si Sedan (127hp, vtec sedan with roof and alloys) with the EL you get rear discs, climate control and a bunch of little stuff (plus a nicer looking car IMO). And a manual EL Premium adds heated leather (and ugly woodgrain) for $2500 more than the Civic.
So after a quick calculation, the Civic is about $434/mo, the EL Touring is about $435/mo and the Premium is $465/mo. Easy call in my case...

I just saw one of these yesterday in Utah. I had never heard of them before, but consider myself a fairly knowledgeable car guy. Needless to say I was interested. It looked like a smoother Civic w/ the previous gen Accord taillights. Very cool. If he wasn't going so slow I'd have oogled longer.
Now I'm just glad I searched before making a new topic like, "OMG!! I saw a new Acura Model!!!".

pretty much any car is legal in the states, you just have to check with your local DMV on the rules and regulations on how to transfer it. I've personally have brought a 95 Jeep Grand across the border from B.C. to Washington state.
I had to go through US Customs with a bunch of paper work for "transporting a vehicle from outside of the US." then I had to make sure the truck passed local emissions. Once the truck passed, it was just like renewing your yearly registration.
hope that helped
