RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?

RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
I have a predicament here.
My cousin was coming home the other night and his friend wanted to drive his car. Of course he said he was experienced
He was in 4th gear at around 7500rpm and when he tried shifting to 5th he put it in 3rd. He didnt even react to it and let it rev down on its own.
Now the car wont start and there is no compression in cylinders 2 and 3 and 150psi in 1 and 4.
Also spark plug number 2 is bent a bit so it seems the piston smashed into it.
Thrown rod it seems.
My question is, is it possible to save the engine? What will we need.
Or will we need to buy a new one.
What should we expect to spend to get it back on the road.
Any other questions let me know.
Thank you. Tyler

Re: RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
the engine took a ****.
depends on what you mean by 'saving the engine'
from what it seems BOTH bottom and top end are damaged youll need to replace pistons and rods and possibly crank(since all cylinders get evenly damaged) maybe only 2 cylinders took a **** im not sure what the compression should be on the a2 or z1 and see if theres any damage on cylinder walls or the block itself. thats for the bottom.
as far as the top goes. if you said as much as the spark plug got bent. youll need to replace valves seals and possibly head gasket while youre at it.
im sure im missing more.
it all depends on your experience and availability to do the rebuild yourself. if the car is not a daily and you can take the engine apart and do most of the work yourself (with the exception of machine work ofcoarse) then i guess yes you can 'save' the engine (fixing the damage and replacing parts withing your existing engine)
now if youre not as experienced and dont have the time or ways to rebuild yourself. then youll have to take the car to a shop(which will probably take longer). have them take the engine apart and see the damage and give you a quote on the repair. if their quote is too high then you might wanna get a running longblock and do a direct swap.
its your call at the end of the day depending on where you live and how much a decent swap with little mileage goes for. and how much youll be charged for labor. and the time youll be carless. its your choice. either way i think to get the car back running it will cost you around 2k.
i'd just whoop that *****s *** and make him pay for everything

i'd do the same...how do you shift from 4th to 3rd...theres a lockout mechanism isnt there? you have to really JAM it into 3rd
at least i feel like there is a locking mechanism.
if you have the experience....you probably wouldnt be asking how much it costs
so my guess would be you'd have to get a shop to do it...and it's not gonna be cheap like 2-3k.
THEN there is the possibility that the shop can mess up or miss fixing something and down the road cause you problems with the motor
there can be so many things wrong with it...you might want to get a quote on how much itll be to fix it then decide if you might just be better off with getting a new motor
do you have insurance? and is it full coverage?

if it still had a warranty and u told the truth to the acura dealer what happen they may get a goodwill warranty on this. i had this happen to me before and got my motor replaced which was a 8k *** up. when mine blew up i cracked a valve keeper and it dropped the valves int he cylinder ruining the whole motor. at fiirst it was throwing a code for missfire they adjusted the valves and the code went away for a day or two and came back. i re adjusted them myself after they did it. the code went away i drove it a few miles and layed into the throttle as soon as i hit vtec it shot the valves down into the cylinder. this could possibly be the same problem that happened to you. the problem was initiated when miss shifted from 5th to 3rd....no insurance will not cover this. goodluck ur best bet is to buy kpro and buy a k24 motor. probably the cheapest replacement for a k series.

if youre gonna save it might as well get a new engine and tranny saves time of buying all the parts that needed to replace and it will cost you the same thing

Re: RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
We got a few things sorted out though.
Engine is gone...no question about it. There's a decent sized gash in the piston where it slammed against the spark plug.
He decided if hes gonna get another engine, hes gonna upgrade.
We found a minty K20A (Type R) motor. Pretty damn cheap too. $3400
We have access to a shop so we'll be able to do the swap ourself.
On the plus, He's gonna give me the blown motor to play around with *slash* part out.
This should be happening in the near future so i'll post when there are updates. Cheers everyone.

There is no getting lucky. Neutral over rev usually results in a K24 swap
You pretty much grenade the engine....
sorry man... You better make him pay or take him to small claims.

pretty much that motor has nothing u can part out but the alternator and power steering pump. im sure the block and head is trashed beyond any kind of repair to resell.

Re: RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
The main reason I want the blown engine is to use it as a learning experience. I've never taken apart a k20 and I'd like to see what kind of damage is done. That kind of stuff has always interested me. I'll put up some pictures when we get this underway if i can. Probably gonna be 1.5 or 2 weeks before we get started.

Re: RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
So today we started tearing apart the old engine. Haven't gotten to far yet but got the A/C out, Disconnected Hoses/ plugs/etc. and got the valve cover off.
Didnt get to work on it alot but at least we're under way...
Engine should be shipped by about wednesday.
Sorry I dont have any good pictures...I'll get ahold of a camera tomorrow

Re: RSX-S Missed Shift. Need new engine?
Getting Everything apart now.
When I took off the intake manifold, I could hear something rattling around. Turned out to be parts of a valve.
I added a pic of the destruction. Ouchie!
Ouch! You can see the valve bent on the left side of the picture too.
So now we found an engine hoist and got ourselves a friend with forklift to move the engine into location whenever it arrives. Still gotta order it yet :\
Its getting there.
Edit: The kid that did it is paying $2000. Every little bit helps!
