Anyone with a base RSX running 5w30 instead of 5w20? comments?
Hi guys, I know the car calls for 5/20 instead of 5/20, but I spoke directly with amsoil and mobil 1 and they said out of warrantee the 5/30 can be run in the place of the 20 weight, and that it should provide more film strength and protection overall. Has anyone else ran 5w30? I'm using it now, and the car feels slightly more sluggish, although it also feels smoother, and quieter.
I wish I knew if there was any truth to the claim that honda and others are specing the 20 weights now due to fuel economy and not whats best for overall engine life.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I actually switched to 5w30, then back to 5w20. the car felt sluggish.
Its tough to describe, the engine feels more responsive, and you can hear it more. It just feels muted with the 5w30. I'm sure either is fine, but I'm sticking with the 5w20.

They can't void your warranty because of what weight of oil you are running. As long as you are putting oil in it. I have called mulitple dealers (or all manufacturers) and asked about running synthetic and its effects on the warranty and they says they don't recommended it (subaru lady was a beeotch) but it won't void the warranty. Same with a 5W30 and 5W20.

I have been using 5W-30 on my base RSX, the car really felt there was something holding it back. But after I switched back to 5W-20, man, the car just felt like new, more response, just much better. And a whole lot smoother.

Right, but isn't that only a problem on the 02-03 models? I have an '05 and I've been using Mobil1 5w-20 syn. with no problems. Even had an oil analysis test performed by Blackstone Labs and everything came back positive.

Re: (turboteg2nv)
A few years ago Honda changed the oil viscosity recommendation for most of its vehicles sold in the United States from 5w-30 to 5w-20 to achieve better fuel economy. Significantly, HMC didn't change its oil viscosity recommendation for its performance engines. To this day, the S2000, the RSX Type S's and the 06-08 Si's soldier on with 5w-30 in their sumps. Additionally, when some of the early '02 Si's -- vehicles with 160hp K20 motors -- experienced camshaft failures (pitting and galling), the traditionalists (Neanderthals, Luddites -- take your pick) decided there was enough of a risk of engine damage in engines often turning higher RPMs to stick with what had worked for decades. I'm one of those guys.
