ok guys.

i attempted to check the cams tonight. and yes attempt is the word here. first i got the intake cover and coil pack cover off. then i ran into the first problem that the big vacuum tube that goes into the side of the intake would not come off. at all. so i just disconnected the side that goes into the intake duct and the two coolant hoses attached to it. Then the big issue. The very left portion of the coil pack cover has a piece that is broken off right around the left most nut. So as you know, the far nuts on the end have to come off as well as the sleeve under the plastic cover to lift the coil pack connections out of the way to lift off the cover. well not so much as the left nut just spins. i tried to loosen it with my ratchet and you just keep turning and turning. So what I think is happenening is the stud in the valve cover must be spinning inside or something and whoever had this car before my brother probably did this, and the best way to get to the coil packs was the break the plastic cover around that nut so you could still get to them. Well I managed to pull it up enough to see some of the intake cam. And I really mean some in a very minor way. I did not see much so far as pitting and all. I saw a few very small marks on the lobe for cylinder 1, but the rest looked ok, but I could not see all of their actual lobes, just the bases. And I could not see jack on the exhaust end. So I put everything back together so my brother has a car still for work tomorrow, but I guess that nut is going to have to be cut off or something and a stud put in or whatever.

Did you search for vacuum leak?

I took clinical neuropsych last semester, and the old professor taught us something very important: If you are hungry, don't go hunting for purple and pink zebra's in africa when deer frequent your back yard.

In other words, if you did all that, and didn't check for vacuum leaks first, you may be wasting your time.

no dude i definitely did. i as well listened to each fuel injector, even though i had already done that before. at the same time thought i had never thought i would run into this problem and the previous owner would be such an idiot. i looked at all the hoses (that i could see and find of course) and listened very carefully for anything. And the thing is the engine is running like it is fine, RPM wise. Not like a vacuum leak where the idle higher and can fluctuate, it has a nice idle around 750-800, but there is just that hiccup deal on cylinder 2. Maybe I could get a video of it, if it could pick up at all for the video.

couldnt. could only lift the VC up like 4 or 5 inches at best. only enough to see the springs and the section of the cam facing the springs at that point.

Interesting. Good luck getting that bolt off so you can remove the VC. You may have to remove the cam or at least turn the engine over (while it's OFF) to fully inspect the cam lobe.

I'm telling you man, this is a real problem with the cams. Go to EPHATCH and post this, or at least read the other threads about people who have had this problem.

I definitely read on there, and if it does come down to this I have thought maybe of contacting Honda of America about a warrantied replacement? I dunno. But definitely will post a thread over there.

I’m gonna have to lean toward the CPS. It doesn’t have a distributor so that would be next to make the mixture rich and would explain the “misfire”

Were you able to get the valve cover off? The valves tighten over time, especially the exhaust valves and it can cause all kinds of goofy issues. Mine had a hiccup about 3k when I would accelerate to get on the highway, did a valve adjustment and that took care of it, it was also running a little rich before I did the adjustment. Hope you got it figured out!

thank you buddy I actually haven’t been back out to mess with it. But I’ll grab my feelers and see if this does the trick! I’ll let post updates along the way.
