When to do valve adjustment

I keep hearing about people on the board here adjusting their valves at 15K, 30K, and so on, but in the owner's manual, it says to wait until 105K. Is there any reason to adjust them sooner? My ITR is a daily driver, and driven hard, but no track time. Any help would be appreciated http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

No way does it say to wait til 105K for valve adjustment.

My dealership does it at 15K, 30K and 45K...etc.

They see alot of loose valves, thats why they do it at 15K, better safe than sorry.

Re: When to do valve adjustment (Yellow Submarine #00-0675)

105K??! HELL NO!! I believe the "recommended" interval is 30k, but the general consensus among ITR owners (and even the service dept. at the local dealership!) is that the valves will be pretty out of wack at 15k. I plan on getting mine done at 15k for sure... http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

I've had mine set once a year just before getting the car inspected. I think that I'll have the valves checked every 4-5 months on my new engine when it arrives.

I hear it's easy with instructions and a certain $50 SnapOn tool, but I plan on having the dealership do it just so that everything is properly documented.

If you are worried about warranty, have the dealer do it.

Its pretty easy, but real easy to do MAJOR damage if not done right.

I have the Acura Integra 2000 Owners Manual open right here in front of me, and on page 164, under maintenance schedule for severe conditions, it says to adjust before 105K only if noisy. If you like, I can scan it in...

Hey Yoshi,
If you took your car in to the Dealership for its 30K maintenance. They did a Valve adjustment, because it's apart of that check off list that they have.

I believe you, but if you actually DRIVE your R, it will be making lots of noise before 105k... I wouldn't go over 30k or so, but hearing people talk about how out of whack their valves are at 15k makes me want to do it early.

My dealership told me not to worry until 105K, and it says 105K in the manual...

Gotcha, that's what I was wondering. I'm at 55K now, I'm thinkin that they are pretty noisy too. Thanks for the advice http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: When to do valve adjustment (Yellow Submarine #00-0675)

No problem...Chris is checking his manual now so that I don't have to... 105k seems real high. I think your dealership is slacking off because ours just told us the other day that they adjust the valves on Integras every 15k (as preventative maintenance). 55k is a long time, definitely get it done at the next service!

Re: When to do valve adjustment (Yellow Submarine #00-0675)

The Integra Service Manual Maintenance Schedule table on pages 4-5/4-6 states to inspect every 30K miles under normal conditions AND under severe conditions or 24 months, whichever comes first.

Re: When to do valve adjustment (figment)

Ack! You guys are scaring me. I'm at 40K now with no adjustment. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emcrook.gif The dealer said they sounded fine at my 30K service, but recently VTEC sounds really harsh, so I haven't been on the big cam in a while http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsad.gif

My #1 item on my X-mas list was the Snap-on tool, so we will see what happens. (My family is exchanging gifts this weekend.) I plan to have them done soon after.

Any tips I should know going in? I've read the how-to at http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/v...lveadjust.html and it seems pretty straight forward. Should I plan to reuse the valve cover gasket, or should I have a new one standing by?

Thanks,

-Floyd

I have did mine at ~19,000 miles. There were a few that needed adjustment.
I will say that you can't adjust them to much. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif

Re: When to do valve adjustment (Floyd)

Here's a re-post of mine from a few weeks ago:

"Whether or not you have Acura perform the 30K maintenance, be sure to check your valve lash. I believe it's a 15K maintenance issue. I waited until 29K to check mine, and my valves were INCREDIBLY loose, 7 to 8 times more than the +/- .02mm range. It was unreal how loose they were."

If anyone waits more than 15,000 miles to adjust their valves, they're nuts. I'm all for following the factory maintenance schedule on most things, but it isn't the bible.

Re: When to do valve adjustment (Willard)

Maybe a different perspective....

$20 for all new gaskets & 1 hr of your time every 15,000 miles.
OR
Poor performance, slack-arse valves, and a happy acura dealership that gets to sell you a new Acura because you don't like your old one...

I've never opened a Honda yet that had over 15,000 that DIDN'T NEED AND ADJUSTMENT....

Trust me, it's worth $20 to do it & be done with it every 15,000 miles. Do you change your oil every 7500 like it says in the manual??? Who gets the real benefit here?

I'm not trying to be a pain, but really - as hard as most of us drive our cars, why skimp???? http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emhammer.gif
