I dont know if I'll be much help in answering your question since I haven't driven my dad's car in a while and I've only driven my dad's E30 a few times but it felt similar to my ITR. I like the fit better in my ITR because the cabin feels more enclosed. The cabin in the E30 has more head room for yourself and passengers in the back. Both cars had the feel of a "track" car and both are very responsive to corners and acceleration out of corners is great. As for refinement i'd give it to the E30 M3 there's something about it. I cant describe it. I love my ITR to death but my dad gets more compliments in his E30 than I do in my ITR. It all depends what your looking for. If you can find an E30 that is in great shape and are willing to deal with what comes with a 17 to 20 year old car then an E30 is great. If you want a newer car that is similar to the E30 then I'd go with the ITR. But hey I own an ITR so I may be a little biased. Hope that helps a little sorry if I didnt answer you question...if i didnt, next time I drop by my dad's i'll take a drive in his car to refresh my memory.

I've driven both. My brother in law used to have a mint E30 M3 in L.A. which I drove several times.

Its hard to compare front wheel and rear wheel drive cars - but setup can make the difference a lot less.

I liked the M3 engine a lot but I hated the leather seats and interior (those could be changed but you would decrease the value of the car).

Mods are expensive for the M3 and rarer.

My vote is for the R

If you have some free time read throw this post that I found on the E30 M3 forum, they compare the E30 M3 with the ITR.

2 different cars

i was going to buy an E30 M3 recently. but the idea of spending £7,000 on a 16+ year old car thats done 90,000 miles didn't sit well. no matter how well it drives

however, if they were the same miles, same price, same condition.....i'd probably choose the ITR. only because E30 M3's didn't come in Right Hand Drive

even though the thread is old, M3's are SICK!!!

especially the E30's and E36's, much more of a driver's car

that being said, buy my M3

how is this even a question?? the only place the e30 falls short over the type r is maintenance..but that wouldnt stop me from buying one. too bad people still want 15-17k for an m3 with 150-200k miles

That should tell people something right there. But think about it. The R isn't too car behind. Now its time to let this thread go back into the grave.

Personally, I'm no fan of Bimmers. I think BMW stands for Big Money Wasted.

BUT

I have to admit to having a soft spot for E30 M3s, even though the suspension (both front and rear) is not optimal. They are one of two cars with a strut front-end that I'd actually consider owning.

There's a shop just around the corner from where I live that specializes in BMWs, and they've always got 2-3 E30 M3s sitting out front. And every time I drive by, I catch myself drooling, just a little bit. They are seriously fun cars.

If BMW still made cars like that instead of overpriced, poorly engineered lead buckets, I probably wouldn't hate them so much.

you can find a nice used E36 M3 with 75,000-130,000 miles for anywhere from $10,000 to $14,000 in great condition still.

Yes, but he was talking about the E30 M3, not the E36. The E36 is cheaper and for good reason IMO.

the only reason why e36m3's are cheaper is because they were mass produced..i wouldnt knock on the permorance of any M car especially an e36..

Thanks for all the replies especially christuffeR feedback...If interested when I get the car im looking for I will give some feedback as well...Back to the dead this thread go's...By the way there is a reason why a car with 125k miles are going for 15k or more and are more sought that a e36; winniest racing history of a production car maybe or the collecterbility which itr owners are striving for ...

<<<former itr owner...

agreed. but i mean heck, look at the widebody flares on the E30!!!! Pure sex! Hardly any were made compared to the newer M cars however, which is good and bad in a way.

Reason I went with an E36 M3 was because they are SO much easier to find, cheaper in general, more aftermarket parts available etc.

True to a point, but the E30 is also far, far more desirable for enthusiasts, at least for me and other enthusiasts I know.

I'd consider a E36, but I wouldn't pay much for one. Better all around car than the E30 though.

The perfert thread!!

I've been pricing and hunting down 97-98 M3/4/5 sedans for a little while now. Pretty much sure I want Helrot Red w/black.

Any owners here have any complaints or hesitations about high milages M3's? Most seem to be b/w 80k and 100k miles and that makes me nervous on anything any than a honda. It would be a DD only.

I'm about to have both.

Hunting down a low-mileage, minty 1988 E30 M3 is as hard as finding a CLEAN 97 ITR. And when you do find them, sellers are wanting $25-35k. You can occasionally find one in great condition with reasonable miles (<75k) for well under $20k.

One notable one for sale...
http://smg.photobucket.com/alb...20Car/

Seller went from $35k ask, to $34k, to $32k, to listing on eBay for $28k. I still think it hasn't sold. IMO, car is worth somewhere in the low 20's.

even at high mileage the 36 m3 is a great reliable car. dont worry about it so much. just buy one thats been well taken care of. the reason for me buying an e36 instead of an e30 is because i already have a 98 type r as my track car. i wanted more luxary and something thats more drivable for everyday. not too mention the e36 has alot more straight line power than the e30. e36 gets my vote
