Just picked up the December issue of SCC. Feature for the month is a 10 car, 3 test competition. Best handling car wins.

Many of the cars were heavily modified..interesting read.
Who won? I won't spoil it for you....

If they are heavily modified, I won't be surprise that most of them can beat ITR in the handling department.

The R did pretty well, but it was outpowered down the straights.

actually...it was more of a contest..the different mags supllied cars and drivers...
pretty good article...robbie(itr) had onee of the faster slalom speeds..but got 7th overall...one theory behind was because of the high speeds atainable at willow..
those highhorsepwer cars just made up too much time on the straights...

Yeah, it was a good article. That Del Sol had some ITR parts. The ITR did real well with very few mods.

I remember the article saying something about the cars must be streetable and atleast one of them (that did pretty well I think) was out of street trim so it wasn't exactly an even match all around to begin with.

Yeah, he drove his own R in the test. That's a real R owner! The other cars had different drivers then who owned the car. Good stuff.

Very good article, but kinda' lopsided considering the fact that the Escort cosworth was never available in the US and that track-only VW Beetle had a funky hybrid porsche motor and some sick *** suspension setup. Hey, at least the ITR beat the WRX They said in the article that if the ITR had a little more power and some suspension mods it could have tied for fourth. Props to the owner for driving

Enough ITR ***-kissing, how about that badass supra, something like 675Whp, not to mention the RX-7. I think I'm gonna order that video they offered right after the article.

From what I remember of the article off the top of my head, the ITR was not near stock. JDM pistons I tihnk and he did not have the stock suspension. The RX-7 did not have that much done to it. Only a few bolt on power adder's and some suspension work.

NOW. Don't go flaming me if I am wrong. I said from what I remember off the top of my head. I'll double check when I get home.

The ITR's engine is modded enough to "claim" 200 whp.

Suspension mods include APEXi N1 coil-over, Motorsports camber kit, Volk TE37(15")

Yeah, you're right the ITR had some power. Claimed 200whp. Just checked that out...... Still though, the points it lost were mainly from a lack of power.

The Hondas did pretty well if you think about it. Their tire size was microscopic compared to the giants in the FD, and all the other tricked out cars. To me, placing 6th and 7th with off-the-shelf products is good. When you think about it, when it all comes down to it, the one with the biggest tire with an agressive suspension setup will win. Why do you think a Dodge Viper is able to pull alot of Gs with it's stock setup? Look at the size of that tire. 205 size tires is the laughing stock of cars that are equipped with 300+ sizing.

I wasn't dissappointed that the Type R came in 7th. Overall, it's still a little naturally aspirated 1.8 liter 4-banger that is fun as hell to drive. I didn't come with a $40K+ pricetag brand new.

Oh, and those Volkswagen were far from road legal. They're completely gutted with roll-cages and custom suspension setup.

Not to offend anyone, but that car wasn't really respective of what a better prepared Type R could have done. The tires were too small (205/50/15), the car was too heavy and basically, too stock. The Apexi suspension is ok, but it's a little weak for track events.

Put the R on a diet like most of the other cars in the test, ditch the a/c, put 16's on it so that you can run a 215 or 225 (or whatever size tire the KDs come in), put real suspension on it and you'd have a more capable car. The motor will then be enough because the car will just become so much faster in the slaloms and corners it won't be funny.

However, for the slight amount of mods that the R had it did ok. On that note though, it was too under-prepared to show what a good track/autox R can do. Losing to a Del Slo is just embarassing

What did you expect? It was one of Import Tuner's findings. You associate pornography with import tuner, not high performance tuning.
