NASTY Damage From Clutch! MUST Read For You Guys...

Well I seem to have THE most wonderful luck with my Type R tranny.

It all started about 7 months ago when I broke 4 teeth off of my countershaft. I replaced the shaft with a new one from ATS as part of the ATS 4.929FD set.

I bought all new bearings, seals, and of course, replaced the broken part with a stronger ATS piece. I also added the .787 GS-R 5th gear for good RPMS on the freeway and top speed in a pinchhttp://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif

Upon taking the car down the street for the 2nd time right after the ATS install, my clutch went to the floor and did not return.

Upon yanking the tranny back out we found that the 3-month old ACT Xtreme Pressure plate had SHATTERED. With no time to be down any longer, I pulled a brand new ClutchNet Double Diaphram Pressure Plate and 6-puck 6-spring disc from our shelves - we stock them at the shop I work at.

Put the new clutch in and drove the cars around for about one month with absolutely NO problems.

I then yanked the entire ITR swap out of my car and sold the car and bought alighter CX and used the last 7 months to create my dreamhatch.

ANYWAYS, fast forward to last week and my car gets finally finished. Whenever I try to shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd gear either locks me out or grinds sometimes. It's really very annoying, and I am not sure what was going on - until now.

I have another friend whith a fulkly built GS-R motor and he bought a BRAND NEW crate ITR tranny. He ran the same ClutchNet set-up and his 3rd began to grind within 2 months.

He had the tranny pulled and upon removing the clutch and flywheel, what did he find?

A RUINED ITR flywheel. The ceramic pucks on the disc were so strong that they didn;t wear out, but the FLYWHEEL did!

So I now am faced with having to pull the tranny out AGAIN!

So here's where YOU guys can help please:

Which flywheel would be best to go with? JUN or Toda? Who has them, and what makes you love them?

I am also switching to a milder disc too, because I'm not shelling out big bucks for a chromoly flywheel only to ruin it too within a few months.

So where did you guys get your flywheels and how much did they cost?

Thanks for reading, and stay away from the ceramic-pucked discs from any manufacturer!

hmmm...why would it only grind in 3rd gear if the flywheel is damaged? Usually if in only grinds in certain gear(s), it's a problem with the synchros.

.....local buddy has J's flywheels for cheap, straight from japan and ~9lbs.

I'd go with the lightest you can get... next time I'll try a 6lb one..... toda is ok, but not OMFG difference.....

i got a Toda flywheel with an ACT 6 puck disc & a heavy duty pressure plate & have had no problems so far. But i might be getting ready to remove the flywheel soon. (Hurell might be getting it ....... pre-notice for all the scavengers). But i have had no bad luck so far with the ITR trans,ACT 6 puck clutch, & toda flywheel combination.

I'm running Toda flywheel and Toda clutch and love them both. But as everyone has said, get what you want. The Toda and Jun stuff is great and you can't go wrong buying it, but there are some very good parts out there that are cheaper.

Although, you did spend a fortune on your sweet ride......why cheapen up now....I'd get the Toda flywheel and clutch set http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif
