No, I just check the oil every evening and noted it stays clean much longer (pure gold color - no particles), and the mobil1 gets little black particles in it much much sooner.

So the Motul just lets the particulates gum up the engine?

Thats good.....

HAHA... No silly goose. I mean the Motul does not break down as quickly as the mobil1.

I'm not saying one oil is better than another.

But if you want to know which one is breaking down sooner, you cant tell by looks, smell or taste. I reckon tasting it would be just as effective as looking at it.

I think that what RJ is saying, is that the color of the oil has nothing to do with it's breakdown. The color is dictated by the oils pickup of small particles inside the engine.

Comparing oil color samples is usless...

wouldnt 0-40 ester based motul oil be a little to clear to run in 90 degree weather?

That's mean PAO should last longer than Ester for street use?

5W-30 (unless there is some discrepancy in the rated viscocity because it does not have an API star)

Ya you're right, Motul 300v is a crappy oil and bad for your engine.

Or maybe the ester base is less prone to breaking down and turning to sludge at high temps. Or maybe it prevents wear a little better and keeps particulates from forming. Or maybe the folks at Motul know nothing about making motor oil for high performance engines.

ester base stocks are known for their great cleaning ability. the only reason i think that the guys motor oil still looks golden is b/c all the crap was already cleaned out with the mobil1.

if you have two equally dirty motors, the ester based motor oil will turn darker quicker than any other base motor oil. also, if you have a faulty PCV valve it will leave a dirty filmy residue all over the inside of the head. my UOA showed a increase in insolubles and this was confirmed when i pulled the valve cover to do a valve adjustment. my next UOA sample pulled after i did the valve adjustment should show a even higher # of insolubles.

i would choose the motul 8100 0w-40 b/c its close to being a 30wt. oil, 13.3cst@100F (anything below 12.5cst@100F is a 30wt.) and it has a higher high temperature high shear number than the 5w-40.
5w-40 HTHS=3.57
0w-40 HTHS=3.66
-the HTHS number is an indication of an oils ability to resist shearing at high temperatures. the higher the number the better.

generally the higher viscosity an oil has the higher the HTHS number will be. so looking at these number there doesnt seem to be much of a difference until you factor in that the 5w-40 has a higher viscosity than the 0w-40 (14.0<13.3) but the 0w-40 has a higher HTHS number than the 5w-40.

I made no claims over which oil was "better" in any regard.

However you cant make blanket statements about one oil being better without some tech and numbers to back it up with.
