HELP! LOUD clicking/clunking noise from drivetrain!!!!
OK, it started out as a single "clunk" whenever I pressed the clutch pedal in. Then after about another hour of driving, there was the clunking noise during decel, but only when there was NO braking applied and NO gas applied (just using compression). It was a softer clunking, but now it is LOUD...and I can actually feel the clunking. It is speed dependent, as in the clunking speeds up when I am going faster and slows down with decel. I jacked the car up, and when i turn the wheel back and forth there is a clicking noise coming from the tranny. But during driving the clunking noise seems to come from the driver side wheel well...
Is it the LSD? Or something else...I need answeres...
BTW: I tracked my car today, so something may have come loose??

Slight update:
When I move the driver side wheel now that the car is jacked up more, i move it about 1/2 inch back and forth, it gives a distinct and slightly loud clicking noise from inside the tranny housing. I just got this tranny the other week and I will die if something is seriously wrong with it!!! BTW it is a Y21 w/LSD and ATS 4.929 FD. Passenger side axle is NAPA refurbished and the driver side axle and intermediate shaft is off of a '95 LS. The clunking was SO LOUD during driving that people 50 yards away could probably hear it. Damnit, someone out there know tranny troubleshooting plz!!!!!

Can you give more details on the frequence of the "clunking" noise. For exemple does it seem to be the same frequence as a wheel rotation or is it higher then that?
Do you have the clunking noise with the clutch depressed also?
With the car in first gear and with the front wheels raise, turn one wheel and see if the other wheel turns in the opposite direction, if it does not, the LSD is defective.
The drive shafts could also be defective. Are the boots looking good?

All the boots seem to be in good shape (from the outside). I will put the car on jackstands and do the wheel spin test.
As for the frequency of the "clunking" noise, during driving it happens with every rotation of the wheel.
Still looking for answers, plz help!

Well if the noise is present once at every wheel rotation this limits the possible problems to the LSD and the drive shafts. Or else something on the hub assembly is hitting something when it is rotating.
When you have the car up on jacks try to eliminate all the "external" possibilities before concluding that the LSD is defective. Rotate both wheels several times and try to locate the source of the noise. Hopefully it is nothing major.
Good luck.

Spin test complete...LSD is in working condition!
However, is there suppose to be a small 'free play' with the wheel. As in, I'm turning the wheel about 1/4 inch both directions and the other wheel doesn't move, there is just a clicking from the tranny. But after 1/4 inch of 'free play' the other wheel starts to rotate in the opposite direction.
I am calling someone over to pretend to 'drive' the car while its jacked up. Hopefully I can locate it better that way.

Its funny how I automatically think its the biggest problem. Friend came over, we were about to start the car and simulate driving when he said check the lugnuts first. Half of them were about to fall off. Fixed the problem.
Well, during the time the car was up I decided to tear off that damn rattling cat heat shield!

Torque them NUTZ!!!
Some say 80lbs, and some say 90 lbs... I go with 90 lbs...
Did you swap wheels for the track? I did something similar last month at Autox swapping race tires and actually lost a lugnut Like a DUMBASS. I forgot to torque 1 nut and it flew off. Some random guy gave it back to me, I felt like such a Dick but, I learned very well to check, torque and Re-check!!!
Thank God it was at an autox and Not on the road.
Good luck,
A.
