Default smoking jdm type r

like the title says, i have a 98 hatch with a 96 type r motor and trans, it has factory ecu and wiring harness, but for some reason every time i get on it (hit vtec) which is maybe once a week it smokes it *** off. its not oil, i know its not burning oil. It doesnt have a cat so could it just be carbon build up? also theres black soot on the bumper.. could it be running rich?? mods are as follow

cf pswjdm intake
98 itr exhaust mani, no cat 2.5 exhaust to vibrant flat black muffler

any help or insight would be appreciated'

also it has the wrong dizzy on it...sohc vtec,, i just remembered that.. im guessing that may be the problem

Well since its got the wrong dizzy on it, I bet ignition timing has never been even checked let alone set right that could be your problem. Also are you sure it's not oil when my b16 valve seals started to go it'd only smoke in vtec. Remember black smoke is fuel, blue is oil...

could just be running rich. you should just do a regular check up. compression test, and maybe have a tuner use a wideband and check your air fuel. so you have a CEL too? that would make the ecu run in limp mode

i purchased it with all the **** ups already done, iv fixed most everything that was messed up, and yes its black, ive driven 2200 miles and not a drop of oil is missing on the stick. im pretty sure its probably running rich,, but for daily driving it gets 33 mpg and i dont get on it barely, ill just save up and get a dizzy and yes i know it needs a cat (i bought it with out a cat and muffler)

im just not sure if its just from not having a cat or running rich, and itll smoke maybe 1 or 2 times and then itll stop from a week or so of reg driving and do it again

What is the mileage on the motor? Any idea how the previous owner treated it? I agree with Nickeg9Ej1, bad valve seals will cause smoke at high RPM. Pull a couple plugs out. If they are black and full of residue, you could be burning oil. Black, no residue, you're rich. I would definitely check compression as well.

you need to do a compression test and a vacuum test. nothing else really matters until you get the numbers

my wild *** guess, if you say it's smoking a lot under load i would also guess it's down on power and one or more cylinders are down on compression. when you pull the plugs to do the compression test i'll betcha 1 or 2 plugs look a bit different than the rest.

again, that's guessing, do the 2 tests and report back. vaccum will show if the valves are sealing and also a fluttery gauge will help to verify compression after you get those numbers

well while at work i swapped out the plugs and did a compression test, cyl 1 and 2 were at 210 and cyl 3 was at 208 cyl 4 was at 212 all of which are tolerable as far as i know, the plugs were burnt to hell.. shes running hella rich, this took all of idk 20 minutes. lol, i was just to lazy to wanna do this morning, i guess a new dizzy will be ordered, also ive tried searching but does anyone off the top know what the timing should be?

motor runs strong as far as everything is concerned, itll stay neck and neck with a 93 coupe lsv .. i guess thats good lol

could just be mileage. once wear starts in the guides the seals die shortly there after.

it's kind of one of those things. you think, well i could do a valve job, new guides and seals

then you realize you should hone and re ring at a minimum.

then you resize rods and fit arp bolts

replace bearings

before you know it you've rebuilt the engine

in other words, might as well run it till you burn a valve or break a ringland.

the R is hard on plugs. irridium is the choice metal. best burn i've ever seen on an R motor is with the HKS m35i plug

if you run copper change them yearly

I've seen that on my friends JDM B16A (stock P30 ECU). Don't know if my 97 Spec B18C R does that with the chipped ECU.
