Exhausts....

In my search for more info on exhausts.. I got some really clear, concise answers from disordeR yesterday on the T1R catback. Thanks very much. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emthup.gif

Here's my question, being that I don't know a whole lot about exhausts. I know many others probably don't know much either. When I ask about the sound level of the T1R and someone compares it to the spoon street or spoon n1, I have no reference point whatsoever.... no idea how loud that is!! And when I hear that the fujitsubo is pretty quiet and the kakimoto 70mm is crazy loud, I ask "compared to what?". There seem to be a good number of good exhausts out there in discussion (not ricey, tinny ones, either http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmilep.gif). I can obviously figure out diameters/flow and stuff like that, but the sound issue: do you think we could 'quantify' these exhausts, sound-wise?

I guess what I'm proposing is a ranking of sorts for as many itr exhausts as we can. I can't really find what i'm looking for by searching. They are all comparisons to exhausts I have never seen/heard. I'm sure many of you have heard many, many of these systems and have some frame of reference. My experience is only with obnoxious open headers (not me!), the mugen catback and stock. Oh, and sound clips just aren't doing it for me. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmilep.gif Maybe a 1-10 ranking, 1 being stock and 10 being whatever is the loudest.

Anyone want to add their knowledge. Thanks very much in advance.... http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emthup.gif

Are we speaking just 2.5" systems Chris? You've heard my Comptech before. It's a pretty nice system but I want to upgrade soon. Inside the cabin it is loud and deep but outside of the car it is not too bad at all. Just a low tone. Andrew's hatch had the Spoon street exhaust and it sounded good not too loud or obnoxious at all. Hopefully this thread will prove to be informative and help me get a better idea of which way to go when I decide to upgrade come spring time. Have one on me.... http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/embeer.gif

Re: Exhausts.... (TypeR#1111)

2.5"-ish systems, sure. I forgot that. Exhausts that bolt up to 2.5" JDM-sized headers/cats. The only exhaust I heard and actually knew what I was hearing was mugenmike's test pipe/mugen catback. Very nice, deep and not loud at all.

Re: Exhausts.... (1107)

I never heard mikes system? He's running a straight pipe on that Biotch??? nice. I've heard that the m00000gen has some pretty tight restrictions...yay or nay? Oh by the way, Leo only has one of the Fujitsubos left and wont be bringing any more over after that. So....Chris....gonna buy it?

Re: Exhausts.... (TypeR#1111)

Probably not. I was thinking T1R (new) or t1r bpipe and spoon n1 axleback. But, from what I've read, the SMSP, hytech, Buddy Clubs, spoon, kakimoto's and fujitsubo's are nice, as is the mugen. I've just never heard most of these (except exhaust clips, which start to all sound the same) and don't have a clue how to know what I'm getting into. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmilep.gif

Re: Exhausts.... (1107)

i'm running on an EVO.. it's quiet at low RPM but screams at high RPM.. nice deep growl to it too.. to me, it seems quieter than the N1 systems I've heard from Spoon and Apexi.. I haven't heard the T1, but I'm told it's very loud as well..

pretty much any 2.5" system is going to be MUCH louder than the OEM exhaust.. especially when you had a header and high-flow cat or testpipe..

my best advice is to just pick the one that has the functionality, look, and sound that you like..

Anyone else gonna get up in this conversation. I'm considering Spoon N1 axle back on my stock B-pipe, but not too sure if this will work.

That's the problem. I'm not sure, because all the info I can get is so vague and related to having knowledge of other systems. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmilep.gif Can anyone add some insight? (thanks mstewar)

Here's the easiest way to pick an exhaust system:

1. Figure out if you want a loud exhaust or reasonably quiet exhaust (as compared to a stock ITR exhaust).

2. Pick the look you want.

Ok, so does anyone have any info they'd like to share? http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmilep.gif

That is, what do you guys have now, do you like it, gains, sound, etc. There's been a whole lot of goofy threads lately, and I'm interested and putting together as much exhaust info as possible, for me and others that I know are interested.

Re: Exhausts.... (1107)

want a better sound.. dont' get round muffler, oval mufflers will have a deeper tone to it.. the larger the diameter of exhaust, the louder it will sound...

anything with straight through muffler will be loud.. even if you use resonators along with it

i put it this way...

stock is good to mid-high 170's whp - (these 1 or 2 dyno hp will make no difference)
from there n-1 (60mm) exhausts for another 20hp or so
and 63.5mm from there..

What other mods do you plan on doing? I have heard that the Mugen system can be restrictive, depending on the mods done.

I have the Spoon N1 axle back exhaust on my Type R with the stock b-pipe. I have no fitment problems whatsoever. You don't have to worry about any overhang or fitment problems. It is quality! I have had head to head comparisions of B2finiti's exhaust (T1-R) and my exhaust (Spoon N1). We came to the conclusion that the T1-R is louder...but only by a small margin. Like Reid says, just go with whichever one looks better to you. I personally like my Spoon N1. Good luck!!!

Mike, I'm probably going to stay close to what i have now: jdm dc 4-1, carsound, intake and suspension mods (23mm jdm on the way now). I have a vafc on the way to me now, and i'm thinking about kenji's p28. I'm not planning on cams, maybe just tuning the stock cams with some cam gears.

I can definitely handle a much more 'aggressive' sound and don't plan on running a test pipe, maybe at the track. I'm not interested in being heard a mile away, but a nice low, deep sound is cool with me.

Just interested in some comparisons and maybe some info on gains. Like I said, test pipe + mugen was a very nice sound to me, if that helps anyone. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emsmile.gif

if you want awesome sound. buy mugen.
if you want awesome power. buy smsp or hytech
if you want bang for buck/sound. buy t1r b-pipe w/ t1r axleback or spoon axle back
if you want bang for buck PERIOD. buy buddy club spec3 (there are fitment issues i believe)

i have no comment on kakimoto or fujitsobo systems...

Doesn't it hang below the axle? I thought that was its fitment issue.

What fitment issues have YOU experienced?

I hope you're not just giving out incorrect hearsay. http://rely.net/~htimages/smile/emdgust.gif

I am making 179 whp on a stock exhaust untuned. I think I can get into the low/mid 180's on stock exhaust.

I feel his noise pain. The stock exhaust and the ATS FD at 5000 rpms in 5th is more than enough noise for me.

I am actually contemplating the T1R (new) setup and using my stock exel back for daily/trips. Or looking into the silencer.

Re: Exhausts.... (1107)

It fits better than the other exhausts I have had. The only complaint I've heard from some is that the tip protrudes a bit further than others. This is easily corrected if desired, but I wouldn't consider it a problem with fitment.

i saw, a while back, somebody installed the bclub spec 3 on their ITR (UKDM) and the exhaust stuck out about 3 inches past the bumper. maybe it's SUPPOSE to do that.. i don't know EXACT measurements for b-pipe length or if the UKDM itr's are different.

it was not MY experience personally, and i never said it was. i am going from what i heard/saw on an installation on this board.

What about the hytech or smsp catbacks? Are they *that* much better than other catbacks?
