I am not sure on this, but when I tried my spare acura key it couldnt open the trunk/doors...I think there is one master key.

when i bought my old car before...(99 LS used) the ignition key didn't unlock the doors. but when i just purchased my used R the ignition key open all the doors. i guess it depends if the previous owner handed over the "master key".

my ride is the same as urs.
i think its for security reasons.
people can pop ur trunk keyhole thing and make a key with it i think.

I haven't seen separate door and ignition keys since early 90's and older GM cars. Japanese cars have pretty much always used the same key for door and ignition (and they are double cut, can insert them in either way). Older GM cars used separate single cut keys for door and igntion (like your house key, only goes into the cylinder one way). Nowadays even GM uses the same key for door and ignition, and they're even doing them double-cut now, too. American car makers, behind as usual.

I'm pretty sure all Hondas/Acuras came from the factory using the same key for the door and ignition. The only way i can see them being different if it was changed that way by the previous owner. Reasons for this may be:
(A) for security reasons (although I think it'd be a pain in the ***)
or
the more likely reason..
(B) the car was broken into and a thief fucked up the ignition column. Rather than replacing the ignition and recoding it to the factory key for the car, the person just picked up a replacement ignition assembly with key and installed that.
Back when I had my EG, I had the car broken into and although the thief didn't steal the car, they attempted to. My entire ignition column was fucked up and I replaced the entire assembly and had to have the ignition recoded to match the factory key for the car. The coding is more expensive than to just find a cheap replacement at a junkyard with a key.
Does the key for the door open up the other door and trunk? If so, I believe (B) above is probably why you have different keys.

my 98 teg has 2 keys- both operate all locks.
I had a 91TT300ZX and it had 2 keys- 1 master and 1 valet.
I would bet serious money the ignition or door lock was replaced, and probably on a 2000 because of a theft or attempt of one.

The teg's do come with a valet key, which only operates the ignition, or a master key which operates everything. I have a 94 teg and it works like that, and on my GF's 97 GS its like that too.

Yes, it should be one key to open everything, at least thats how it is from the factory.

There is a master key that operates everything - on both of my DA's the "ACURA" on the top of the key is colored red. There is also a valet key that does not open the trunk or glove box, only the doors and ignition - this key has "ACURA" in white.

my theory is that, unless you have the original rubber acura key that the previous owner lost the original key and had to call a locksmith.
First thing I was told by the dealer I bought my car from was to make a copy of the key - they had locked it inside, they weren't familar with the as soon as its in drive doors lock. Not like VW's that engage locks at 10/5mph.

Re: is your ignition key the same key as your front door key? (PhAtBoY Si)
i got the car used from a dealership (not acura) - i got two keys with it, one black acura and one grey acura key. They both start the car but neither work to open the doors or trunk. Have to use the remote to get into the car..NOt sure how to fix this problem in the cheapest way...

The only way to fix this problem is to either have your ignition right now recoded by an auto locksmith to match the locks on your doors...or....have the locks on your doors and trunk recoded to match the keys you have for your ignition. HTH

Re: is your ignition key the same key as your front door key? (PhAtBoY Si)
It gets really fucked up now - I tried the keys in the trunk, and they work! much to my surprise. I wrongfully assumed that since they didn't work in the doors, they wouldn't open the trunk. So basically the keys I got with the car open the trunk and start the car, but don't open the two front doors. Maybe someone fucked up the locks on the doors trying to break in and the kid had those re-keyed. I don't know, but I'll probably have to hit up an auto locksmith. thanks.

Am I the only one that thought "Why would the key to my front door work in my car?"
