will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in?

I have to send out my o2 sensor for a new one next weekend, but I was wondering if the car will run differently without the sensor.. will the engine run rich? or lean? or will it run the same?

thanks!

your check engine light will come on http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthdown.gif

the car will run. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

your o2 sensor is pretty important

my CEL is already on cause the o2 sensor is busted.. but i was wondering if the car will run normal, because I wanted to race at the track next weekend and maybe dyno my car.. so I wanted to know if the car is running normal without it plugged in, or is it running rich/lean.. etc.

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (dc2gsr94)

it'll run rich to be safe.

meaning i'll be slower and produce less horsepower right?

Yep. I believe it will retard your timing 2 degrees as well...but don't quote me on that.

aww, that sucks.. oh well.. thanks for all the replies

why dyno with out a o2 sensor? tahts how they tune the car . oh yeah hows the gas milage been?

hurts gas milage and you'll lose a few ponies.

Not on my car. My car is crippled(burned ECU chip). Top end is total crap.

o2 sensor is pretty important for performace... without it your car will not run to its full potential..

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (fakemike)

i disagree. i found the gas milage loss noticable.

Im running rich simply because my fuel injection is messed up... My gas milage is terrible... I have a gsr engine in my hatch and should be getting well over 300 miles per tank.. but instead im getting 240 - 250.. Of course thats with my ever heavy foot too! http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (Hatchy-Ownzjo0)

well, the gas mileage has been lower, and my top end sucks ass... vtec still kicks in though.. just top end I think is running way too rich.. I am currently getting 188-190 miles on 26 liters., I always fill up $20cdn..

Do you have a CEL?

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (TimoneX)

yup, of course.. i got a cel41, i gotta switch out the broken o2 sensor currently in my car.. i'm guessing it'll run the same with a different o2 sensor code when I yank it out.. i gotta ship this o2 sensor to get another one

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (dc2gsr94)

Have you looked inside your ecu? Isn't the 41, the O2 sensor heater circuit? I have a '96 w/ that same code, and it has a blown chip. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsad.gif Hope it's "just" you O2 sensor. The chip is Sanken STA335A, have a look before you spend forever messing with the sensors. I just went through all that with a friends car. The sensors were fine...blown chip in the ECU.

juniordc2 09-19-2002 06:35 PM

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (TimoneX)

blown chip?! do I have to replace the whole ECU??

juniordc2 09-19-2002 06:37 PM

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (TimoneX)

this is the second o2 sensor I am on.. the first one threw a code 43.. switched to a used o2 sensor, it worked for 3 days perfectly.. 600km on one tank, and ran like a champ.. then after 3 days.. cel came on again, this time a code 41

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (dc2gsr94)

Well look at your ECU before you get excited...saves some hair from lightening. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif I've tried to find a replacement chip for this ECU for 2 weeks. Someone agreed to sell me one for $1.60, provided I bought 499 more. There's one final chick that supposed to call, she said she'd try to find me a sample...10 chips. Otherwise I'm just dumping this OBDII crap.

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (TimoneX)

how do I check my ECU? oh man.. this is the last thing I need right now.. this car has given me so many problems lately.. i'm OBD1.. how did u bring it down to that chip?

TimoneX 09-19-2002 07:03 PM

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (dc2gsr94)

Oh it was blatantly obvious. The whole back is blown off it. Just disconnect your battery, unplug your ECU, ground yourself to metal(discharge static), and open her up. If you don't do much electronic work then just have a quick peak. See if anythings blackened or deformed. Either that or you can run your car and check for battery voltage across your cars O2 sensor plug. You only got one right? Lucky so and so. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (TimoneX)

well, just came back from under car and I measured the resistance, there is none.. and according to my helms.. that means its toast..

TimoneX 09-19-2002 07:58 PM

Re: will the car run normal without the o2 sensor plugged in? (dc2gsr94)

Yes the resistance accross the O2 sensors. I think it's near 14ohms on a working unit. Did you happen to measure voltage accross the heater circuit(black wires)?
