Valve adjustment guestion on gsr
How do I know the white TDC mark is on the "POINTER ON THE LOWER COVER" on the right picture? Can I just look down from the cam gear?

You don't have to be exactly at TDC on each cylinder for a valve adjustment, you just have to be in the general range so that all the valves are closed on the compression stroke for the cylinder you're adjusting. Just make sure that the cam lobes are pointing up and forward on the exh. cam and up and rearward on the intake cam for each cylinder you adjust.
You can just go by the arrows on the cam gears:
Up = #1 cylinder
Forward = #3 cylinder
Down = #4 cylinder
Back = #2 Cylinder

If you take out the spark plugs and put a wooden dowel or something really long down into the cyl (make sure its long enough that you can get it back out ) youll see that when your at the top with each piston it will actaully stay up there for a second or 2 when turning the crank.. you just need to get it close.
I perfer to get close with the cam gear marks then know for sure your at the top with the dowel.

Yeah that works, too, but being that exact is really only necessary when dealing with timing issues, timing belt, things like that where just a few degrees off makes a huge difference in how the engine runs and idles (if at all).
As far as a valve adjustment is concerned, you just have to make sure all the valves are closed on the compression stroke, so really the piston could be anywhere along its vertical up travel, as long as it's right after the downward intake stroke (and the intake valves have closed) or right before the end of the downward power stroke (before the exhaust valves open and the upward exhaust stroke begins).

or you can do it the way a flat rate guy would do it. Just eye ball the base circle, i mean you have a lot of time on the base circle. just adjust it when you see it in the middle of the base circle.
