I dont know about you guys but i have been using synthetci for the last 15k.
my engine has 92k and it runs smooth with no oil burning.

I have no idea if these oils work as advertised, but nine companies are now marketing oil that are said to be specifically formulated for cars with over 75,000 miles.
There is good reason to believe a lot of this is pure marketing, as more cars than ever have 75K+ miles on them and if they can get a lot of them to pay $10 more per oil change, then that's a lot more money flowing into the oil company pockets. But maybe there could be something to the additives to these oils contributing to conditioning seals and gaskets.
Of these nine, I'm only aware of one of them that has any synthetic in it, and that is Mobil Drive Clean Plus HM (high mileage). They offer it in 5W-30, 10W-30, and 10W-40. The 10W-40 does not claim to be low friction / better gas mileage.

I really think it all depends on how well the car has been maintained.
From new up to 88K when I bought my car, the previous owner used Castrol GTX.
When I got it at 88K I switched to Mobil1 (10w30 in summer, 5w30 in winter), and OEM Honda Filtech oil filters.
At 120K I switched to Valvoline MaxLife and STP filters, because I was not able to get the Mobil1 for as cheap as what I got it before, and it was also very inconvenient to get Honda filters. I also decided that synthetic really wasn't worth it since I was changing it every 3K miles anyway.
Currently my car as 162K. At no point since I bought the car has it ever burned or leaked any significant amounts of oil. The most oil leakage has been from the cam end seal, which was replaced last year.
So as you can see, I actually switched from dino oil to synthetic and back to dino again, with no negative effects whatsoever. And yes I take the engine to redline almost every day.

i use syntec 10w-40 on my 145,000 mile teg with no prbs what so ever. been using synthetic since it had 90K

Im still not sure if Seafoam really is good for a high mileage motor for the exact reason you mentioned. Carbon deposits build up and slightly increase compression, and to me, that seems like a good thing 
I really dont know much about it though, and would love for someone who does know to start a thread about it and share why it is or isnt good.

would changing the viscosity of the synthetic used diminish the risks when applying to a higher mileage engine? perhaps a thicker oil persay....
