Strut Sqeak with new Struts after Alignment
1989 Integra LS 148,000 miles
Installed Gabriel (from Autozone) struts front and rear 60 miles ago and just had an alignment performed. After alignment the front dirver strut sqeaks up a storm. At first we thought it was the tie-rod, but it is definitely the strut.
Why did the alignment trigger the squeak?
Is the strut defective?
I definitely want to change it. I don't think the squeak will ever go away!

are you sure you have struts on the car? Last time i thought you had Shocks in front and rear. Did you try remounting the spring? Sometimes they don't get mounted right and they cause squeaking noises.

1st gen Integras and CRX's do indeed have struts in front. Sometimes that upper strut mount causes some noise. It's been some time since I've dealt with struts though (my old Camry had them on all 4 corners ).

Yes, indeed, this model has struts front and rear.
As for the spring, I don't think that this was touched at all.
The squeak comes at bounces and at right turns (it is the driver side front).
If I bounce on the front, it squeaks every time I push down. The noise (using a listening device) seems loudest on the top of the strut at the mounting in the center - as opposed to listening at the outer rubber portion.

The spring was touched, as it has to be removed and then reinstalled on the new strut. Sometimes springs have rubber insulators around the coils at the ends of the spring, perhaps those were not put back on when the new struts were installed.
I remember some Solaras having squeeking problems after installing TRD springs and struts (made by Eibach and Bilstein) but I can't remember what the rememdy for it was.

Sorry, I was thinking of the "big" spring that the strut is in the middle of!!
Today, there was no squeak when pushing down on the hood, but they were there when driving.

Yes I was talking about the big suspension spring (like in the pic below). Sometimes they can make a squeeking sound.

Ah, okay. However, on the '89 model I don't think that they must remove the spring to install a new strut.
It is odd that such a tiny angle adjustment in the alignment would cause the squeak to appear.
Most likely it is due to something holding that strut in place (thus lubricant will work), however I would like to know if it is possible that the strut itself could be the source of the squeak????

Upper strut mount bearings? Do they come with the new strut or are they part of what remains in place after the swap?

Re: Strut Sqeak with new Struts after Alignment (michaelpr)
usually the squeeking noise is caused by the rubber piece on top of the springs, when it is not set right, the rubber piece will rub and will cause the noise .. this just happend to me, and all i did was jack it up, make sure the springs are aligned to the rubber piece on top of it ... and there u go, noise is gone

Re: Strut Sqeak with new Struts after Alignment (acteg94)
Good information!
I just took the car to the mechanic who installed the struts and had him take a look at it. We were pushing down on the front-end to get it to squeak. We push down and when the car springs back up it squeaks. The two mechanics said that it was coming from the strut itself. It seems that both struts are squeaking now, although the driver side one is definitely worse.
They suggested to swap them at Autozone for another pair and re-install. The folks at Autozone have not had any similar problem that they know of.
Could it be the struts?

Wow! I am glad someone else has the problem!!!!
I went to Autozone today to ask if they have seen the problem before and the manager said that he hasn't. He said that they are good quality struts. They are guaranteed with a free replacement, but there is labor involved and there is no guarantee that the new ones will not squeak. Then there is the question of needing another alignment.
How can you describe your squeak??

Autozone guy said he never heard of this problem.
Called Gabriel tech support. They said that it is not a common problem, but said that perhaps it can happen.
Any other info for me?

Re: Strut Sqeak with new Struts after Alignment (michaelpr)
News! And hopefully the final news!!
Replaced the front squeaky struts with news ones. Same kind. Same store. And they still squeaked.
Replaced again with a 3rd pair. Same kind, but different type of box. Same store. And, so far, there is no squeak.
