Speedometer Cable?

I have a 1990 Integra DB1 and when i drive it makes a winding sound from the speedometer area. I was told that older Hondas had cables linked to the speedometer to measure speed and i was told that it is most likely that the cable is whats making the winding sound when i drive. yep the speedo is cable driven and that noise is proly a slowly failing cable/speedo. the winding noise is proly the gears in the speedo after 18 years the lube they use wen they first put that speedo together is proly gone. You coluld try taking out the cluster and lubing everything up with a little plastic grease

dont take out the cluster thats way too much work, just disconnect the sped. cable from the vss on the tranny, now pull out the sped. cable from the wire itself and spray with some lithium grease https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

spraying grease on the tranny end will do absolutly nothing since i assume the noise is coming from the inside of the car its on the cluster side of the cable and usualy speedo cables dont make noise its the cluster or a loose connection to the cluster although lubing your speedo cable may prolong the life of your cable it will undoubtably not fix your problem unless the noise is coming from the outside of your car and you can hear it over the engine and road noise. Pulling your gauge cluster is not that difficult just make sure you disconect the speedo cable before yanking it out of the sleeve it takes maybe 30min your first time to do

that winding noise he's talking about is indeed the speedo cable rotating inside the cluster, just remove it from the tranny end like i said and grease it up... same thing happened to me on my DA, start with that before you go ripping apart the dash

mine is noticibly loud even when driving. so i just unplug the speed sensor? i dont wanna have to take the cluter out reallt lol. i thought the speed sensor was electronic.

Ditching the cable will throw you a code. My DB2 has plenty of miles and was doing the speedo whine. Grease helped, but needs a better re-visit.

If someone is clever enough to work out a clean electronic mod, that would be an awesome thread [that maybe already exists but I haven't yet found.]

The speedo cable is definitely mechanical in the DA/DB's. I would doubt greasing the tranny end would help. Taking out the cluster is actually not that hard. Take a look at the g2 site (link below) for a nice instruction sheet that has some good pictures so you know what to expect.

There is no way yours is as loud as mine...LOL! Mine sounds like a flock of birds chirping! But yeah you can't spray it from the tranny side, it will shut it up for a few min but won't fix it.

hey guys, forgive my n00bishness, but i have had this problem for about a year and i never really paid attention to it since i tend to like to damage my hearing with music (well not really, but whatever). however, recently my head unit was stolen and i've been forced to listen to what can only be described as BacardiBreezer's bird chirping on steroids. sounds like a bird colony actually.

oh, btw, i have a 1990 integra ls hatchback. (is that a DA? i sure as hell don't know) so i'm attempting to fix the problem, but can't find instructions on how to dismantle the dashboard to get in there and grease up the cable. any pointers?

You'd just be better off buying a new cable, if you regreased your current cable the noise could come back in a matter of weeks and you'd be back in the same situation.

Had to do this last night after the cable poped right out on my way home from a night shift at work and i needed to go right back to work first thing in the am.. lame. Taking the dash appart is a snap.. wheel off, 10 philips screws, and you got your gauge cluster swinging free.. careful when you pull the cluster out though because at this age the clip thats pressure fit on the cable itself has a tendancy to slip off. Have a second pair of hands diconect the speedo cable from the trans and slide the whole cable into the firewall abit while you gently pull the cluster out until you have enough room to reach behind and unclip the connection on the back of the cluster. At this point your cluster should swing to your left if you pull down a bit and youll see that mother fucker sticking out of what seems to be nowhere. Now for the fun part. Have your second pair of hands push the speedo wire inside the cable in towards you all the way and grease it up. grease up the speedo port in the cluster and the connect the two again. Now at this point you should have way too much speedo cable on the clusterside of this operation so you can work on it, this is where you need the second pair of hands again. Now that your cable is connected to the cluster, gently push it back into place while your assistant gently pulls the speedo cable from the engine side and keeps their thumb holding the wire inside the cable. Once the cluster is lined up and there is enough slack in the engine bay to reconnect with the trans, make sure the tab on the cable lines up with the slot inside the trans and push that cable in as far as it will possibly go, clip in place with that stupid springclip im sure youve almost lost 8 times now..sweet. Now before you screw anything on the dash side back together, throw your wheel on and test drive... to make sure everything lined up and its not still screwed up... if it is pull apart and see if anything didnt line up. Hope this helps (protip; keep a pivot head telescopic magnet handy... fuck that springclip)
