HC is unburned fuel.

The exhaust won't change your emission numbers. So its a stock car, for emissions purposes.

A 00 GSR is obd2, so it should be somewhat "self tuning" as far as trying not to run rich. If your o2 sensors aren't working correctly, you could be running rich, and causing that. Also, if your cat is failing, or you replaced it with a high flow cat, then that could cause it. You passed, thats what counts. Check your plugs, see if they show running rich. You'll get a check engine light, if the cat fails, and the dealer would have to give you a new one under warranty if it does go / is going bad. (11 years for emissions equipment)

If you're worried about next time, theres a few steps you can do to try and lower that a bit. Change the oil before the test, it helps some. A new air filter can help some I hear (I haven't verified this one though). You're already running high octane, but a little alcohol in the tank should burn cleaner. You can also try using the "Guaranteed to Pass" stuff, Pep boys sells it. It radically reduced the emissions on my Triumph, but the NOx. I can't tell if it lowered the HC, since the car had 4 ppm @ 15 mph and 8 ppm @ 25 before I added it to the tank.

And FYI, 58 isn't really high, compared to other cars. I get to take my 00 gsr in for her first smog test soon as well. I didn't realise that the requirements were so strict for our cars.
