Problem - clutch / trans / throwout bearing??

I have a '96 LS with 150k+ miles on it. I've had a squeaky clutch pedal for a few months but no other problems until now.

Now when I put the clutch in, and then try to put it in gear, 50% of time, there will be a noise when I try to put the car in gear, and then another noise as I release the clutch pedal. The car doesn't seem to want to go into any gear unless I apply a lot of force (it seems to go in 1st and Reverse fine though), and it tends to shift more easily at lower RPM.

If the car is in gear and I push the clutch in, the longer I have my foot on the pedal, the louder this noise becomes (sounds like spinning metal coming together - not like gears grinding)...

Anyway I've driven quite a few cars that have had failing clutches and they would slip in each gear, but this is NOT what is happening to my car.

I checked the fluid reservoir, but its full, but I'm not sure if that would rule out a master or slave cylinder problem.

Any ideas what it may be or ways to troubleshoot this?

You need a new clutch. One of 2, possibly both causes:
1.The spring in the clutch disc has came out in is stuck between the disc and the pressure plate.
2. The strap(s) in the pressure plate broke off and is bouncing around.

I ordered a new clutch & throwout bearing so hopefully that should take care of it. I'm just hoping it's not a trans part failure.

Correct! Number 1 FTW. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

my clutch did similar when it died. does the car ever jerk when you let the clutch out? i didn't have a spring pop out but it almost did, some of the metal around one had sheered off. i hope you bought something decent like an oe fuji carbon or exedy replacement.

Found an OEM Exedy kit with everything for only $129 shipped - brand new.

I didn't notice any jerking when I let the clutch out. Mostly it just didn't want to go into gear unless I was at VERY low RPM - but once it was in gear, the car ran fine.

I found it was just easier to jump from say 1 to 3 or just start out in 2nd and the go to 4th and lug the engine while I got up to speed, rather than risk doing any further damage.

I was relieved to find the broken clutch spring though, since I was really hoping I wouldn't have to rebuild the trans.

make sure you replace the clutch, throwout bearing, and dont forget the pilot bearing, i didnt hear you mention that one. youve got it all off anyways, may as well replace everything than will fail.

hell even maybe a rear main seal and flywheel while your inside.
