I've personally never put RTV on any oil pans, domestic or import. Last time my friend did his oil pan gasket on his jeep it was leaking within a week.

Both ways are good, it's with what you would want to go with. Mine I only used a small amount of RTV, due to the engine's age. me personally I don't like seeing the red sealant around the edges. hope this helps.

huh? Hope you know the 1/4 wrench is not a torque wrench. Just a regular ratchet wrench. I got mine at sears.

Let us know if that ring problem solved the leaking. I'm curious.

AND don't use any sealant on oil pan. Trust us. And before you put the gasket and pan on, make sure the surface on the block and the pan is free of old sealant.

Why would a 1/4" drive torque wrench not be a torque wrench? Or were you just being sarcastic, implying that the quality is junk and to only use it as a ratchet (which you're probably right on the HF ones)?

Whoa wha? Do you know what a torque wrench is?

Bing Dictionary:

wrench with adjustable torque: a wrench with a gauge attached for regulating the amount of torque applied to a bolt

I used a regular size hand rachet.

What Patrick is trying to tell you is that there are 1/4" torque wrenches, they exist.

Problem solved! No more leaks. Installed gasket dry.

I just put an oil pan on my 1998 Civic HX and left it totally dry based on what I read here. I noticed when it was manufactured they put a very small amount of RTV around the ends (oil pump) and tiny spots around the sides. I scraped it all off the engine and cleaned it extremely well. I used rubbing alcohol based on a youtube video I watched, and then switched to "heavy duty engine cleaner", and it cleaned 100x better. Once it was sparkling clean, which took at least an hour, I went back to rubbing alcohol to remove any of the engine cleaner that might eat away at the gasket. This model uses a gasket that's more of an O-ring than a flat gasket. I like that idea much better as an O-ring is a superior sealing mechanism for this type of application. The fact that it was more of an O-ring made me more comfortable not using RTV. An O-ring needs to compress evenly to fill any imperfections, and RTV could get in the way. It was a little cold, so I put heaters under the engine and brought the oil pan inside to warm up before putting it on considering what happened to the Challenger.
