get a genuine Honda one. Why do you want a "gates super insane blue ass racing bitch"?

The honda one goes for 100k miles and you can't beat OEM quality.

www.bernardiparts.com is a good place to get them.

I always also get (all genuine Honda):
-water pump
-front main seal
-cams front seals
-tensioner and spring
-accesory belts (they're cheap anyway...although I don't mind buying these elsewhere)

The timing belt has to come off to do all that work, so might as well do it all at once. I also always change cam and crank seals while changing timing belt. Did it at 180K miles and again at 270K miles. I changed the timing belt only at 90K, and got lucky I guess that the water pump and all the seals did fine until 180K.

I cannot recall ever having a single issue with any OEM Honda part I have installed on the car in the 10 years I have owned it, from 89K miles up to the current 297K miles.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

i always opt for the gates belts, people fail to realize that honda parts are made by an OEM manufacturer and rebranded honda, gates belts are gates belts, and their racing belts are excellent quality, i love those kevlar reinforced designs.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

Let's remember that the OP is asking about a stock engine.

The Gates Racing timing belt is 2-3 times as much as the OEM Honda timing belt from a place like Carland Acura www.acuraautomotiveparts.org What is the point of using such a belt on a stock engine?

Then you consider that the eBay link above with the Gates Racing belt includes what appears to be no-name water pump and tensioner pulley, and suddenly that package doesn't seem so great for $180.

For a stock engine, get the OEM parts for $180-$190 and call it a day, until it needs to be done again 90K-100K miles later.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

sorry? gates sells a timing belt component kit for 80 dollars that includes a brand new water pump, oem timing belt, tensioner, and whatever else is needed for the timing job.

GATES Part # TCKWP247 More Information About this Part PowerGrip Premium OE Timing Belt Component Kit W/Water Pump; 3 Components (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 0 Idlers, 1 Water Pump) $81.79

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

oh lawds I wouldn't trust that kit for a second, not for 90K-100K miles.

go to a local parts store and buy the oem parts, i just bought the OEM timing belt for 36 bucks... the timing belt and tensioner kit is 90 bucks...plus 60 for water pump...why you need a racing kit for a stock car?

Yes I am serious, I would not trust a timing belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley that costs the same as an OEM water pump by itself.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

If you count the teeth on the water pump in the first link on the close up pic. You will notice it's a 19t generic pump and not a 22t. You don't want that on a gsr. If you installed what is in the picture it would be a ls timing belt and pump. With those two parts it would work but cause cavitation at higher rpm. It may be a generic picture but I would not buy it because the picture isn't correct.

In the decade I've been doing my own maintenance and repairs on my Integra, the phrase "you get what you pay for" holds true for so many things in so many instances.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

What is your point? I don't dispute that OEM Honda parts come from those manufacturers. Hondas are full of Denso, Nippondenso, NGK, Mitsubishi (alternator), Yamada, Nissin, and many other branded parts.

However the water pumps shown in some of those links above appear to be a "no-name" version, whereas one from Honda will say "Yamada" on it. I don't trust no-name parts like that, for such a critical part to engine operation.

Anyway, that's my opinion, you have your opinion. OP can take them for what they're worth.

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

ebay is never the best place to buy parts for anything

PatrickGSR94 01-26-2011 03:50 PM

Re: NEED OPINION on gates blue racing...etc.timing belt, water pump

As for that Gates timing belt kit with water pump, I'm sure the Gates belt is just fine. By itself the belt is around $35 which is the same price if you get it from Honda. But then you have the tensioner pulley and water pump together for basically $50 or less. I simply do not trust those parts being of OEM quality when they're sold that cheaply.

Again, that is my opinion. Take it or leave it. It's not hurting or insulting anyone in any way, shape, form, or fashion.

Honda timing belts are made by gates oem is fine but the racing ones that gates put their name on are several times stronger if you are going to abuse your car than the gates racing belt is your best bet but if it's just your daily than stock oem is good
