my tranny wont shift into 2nd, 4th, or reverse.....
well i finally got my car running. come to find out my gsr hydro tranny wont shift into 2nd, 4th, or reverse. 1,3,5 work fine. 2,4 reverse i can kinda move the shifter to where the gear should be, but it wont go in. it doesnt really grind, it just kinda feels like the gear isnt there. is it possible to have broken something internally, or is it something small like i need to have my linkage re-aligned...i need my car to work, because my other car **** the bed, so any help is appreciated

try inspecting the shaft going from the shifter back to the tranny. i'ts more like a support brace.... mine came disconnected from the tranny there and i had the same problem...

I doubt its your clutch since 1-3-5 work fine. It could be a problem with your linkage or bushings interfereing some how. I would check all bolts and bushings between the shifter and the tranny to start and see what you come up with.

Aren't 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears on the same shaft inside the tranny? Could be a problem with the forks that engage that particular gearset inside the tranny. If everything outside the tranny looks okay (linkages and stuff) then I think you will probably need to just get a different tranny, unless you want to tackle opening it up, finding the actual problem, and then replacing the necessary internal parts.

I bet it's outside.
1st & 2nd share the same synchro hub & shift fork with each other.
3rd & 4th share the same hub & fork.
Not only that, but the 3/4 hub is on the mainshaft, the 1/2 hub is on the countershaft.
Reverse doesn't even have a synchro.
I'm guessing the shift linkage is hitting something when you try to move the lever back. (2, 4, & R are back...) Or that fixed rod in the linkage is coming loose.

is it possible my linkage just needs to be re-aligned, or like my shift fork or something is just out of alignment? the linkage was on the tranny when i transported it a few times, and might have been bumped around....

When you move the lever back, it pushes the shift rod into the tranny. Is something in the way (exhaust)? Is something bent that's preventing it from going that way?? Watch the action of that linkage while someone's inside working the shift lever.

we looked, and it didnt hit anything. i wonder if my linkage is just a hair too short, like too short to put it into gear fully?

Edit: jesus, another thread from 2004, this is getting annoying.

I had the same problem, did an auto to manual swap and discovered that the new boot I put on the tranny/shift rod was interfering with the shift rod where is goes into the tranny. It is a pain in the butt to remove the shift rod so I just cut the boot off and I am going to make one out of an old bike inner tube.
