whenever you have to drive this type of seal in with a hammer, always dab a bit of grease at 2 or 3 spots on the backside where the spring sits in the groove to keep the spring in. it's easy for it to pop out with the tapping of the hammer. and you won't know until it's all back together and it leaks. not saying that's the case here for sure, but if you didn't, it's a good possibility.

I was able to just push the seal in really hard to get it to seat.

That is all i do when i install mine. You do have to be careful not to scratch the seal with the end of the splines. sometimes they will scratch just a little but enough to leak. I know you are methodical on your stuff but even so, slips happen.

ohhh ok. then if you didn't have to tap it in, it should be fine in that respect.

Mine was a little cheaper because I got the 1-5 syncro's, the seal kit and the differential roller bearings and shim kit only. I didn't need to replace the other bearings. They were still in great shape.

I paid 150.00 plus tax and shipping for the syncros and 115.00 plus tax and shipping for the seals bearings and shim kit.

Yeah it is deff coming from the new seal I installed. I think the axle seal surface might be funky, I'm going to replace that axle with a Raxles Axles. That AZ axle shakes a little under acceleration too.

This is looking good. If you wouldn't mind attaching the pictures to the posts, that would protect the thread from losing the pictures if photobucket ever has an issue.

take a mic to the axle where the seal rides and compare to the old one. at least then you know it's the seal for sure

How tight should the seal fit on the axle? Because I test fit the seal on the axle before I installed it, and it seemed pretty snug.

hmmm. yea, you don't want it too tight or it'll just wear. snug, as you said. guess something musta happened to the seal

nice write up and very good pictures! one thing i want to point out is to not to put antiseize on splines of the input shaft of the transmission. You're suppose to use high temp lithium grease.

Seems I used that last time and it gummed up a little bit too much for my liking.

On the site it says $275, and you say you paid 150 is that some kinda deal threw HT or have the prices gone up?

I appreciate the detail and time you took to do this. I'm a big fan of never-seize, but it's more for metal-on-metal applications like bolts. Axle seals should always be oil or grease. Possible some metal flake damaged the rubber seal, but it's hard to say.

I never put anti-seize on the axle seal, must be confused. I put a little on the throw-out bearing where it slides back an forth on the input shaft.
