Went out in the garage tonight and hammered it out!! First off I have to give a big thanks to David @ Syncrotech for his help and advise!! Everything I ordered from them was great, fast shipping and quality!! After installing the carbon syncros the trans shifts like butter. Seems like no matter have fast I try and shift no grind at all!!

Set the gear assembly in place

Dont forget to remove clean and re-install the magnet located here.

Make sure the sealing surface is clean and dry before you apply your hondabond or other sealant.

Slide the top case in place, I had to wiggle it a bit to get it all the way down untill you reach the C clip.

Size: 66.9 KB

Now use your snap ring pliers open up the c clip and tap on the case with a rubber mallet. It should lock into place as shown

You can install all the case bolts
Name: IMG_6705.jpg
Views: 699
Size: 36.4 KB

install the 2 bolts and springs and check *****.
Name: IMG_6706.jpg
Views: 786
Size: 49.8 KB

Before you install the plug cover make sure the C clip is engaged with the bearing all the way.
Name: IMG_6707.jpg
Views: 755
Size: 43.5 KB

install your brackets and the reverse shaft lock bolt.

Name: IMG_6709.jpg
Views: 796
Size: 47.5 KB
Name: IMG_6710.jpg
Views: 759
Size: 50.4 KB

install your speed sensor, it should slide right into place.
Name: IMG_6711.jpg
Views: 760
Size: 42.6 KB

Clean this area real good and apply some anti-seize or grease of your own choice. Then install the shift fork and throw-out bearing.

Install your new axle seals if you got them.

And that is pretty much it.

Oh and don't forget to re-fill your transmission with the correct fluid. I chose Torco MTF

Very informative.
I have an ITR trans to rebuild with NEW syncros and bearings as well as a 4.9 final.
Your post should help me a bunch.

I have one how question how long did it take? I know in my can I don't have to change the LSD. Just trying to get an idea of what a project like this takes.

If your not changing the LSD than should be fairly quick. I would say a Saturday afternoon.

wow. just wanna say, again, thanks for taking the time. i know how much longer it can take to log everything with all the pic taking and whatnot, and sometimes you get pretty anxious towards the end to just get it done; and you did it pretty detailed. great write-up, my friend

question though; is there any sort of break in required for the syncros? or is it just the basic clutch break in period?

Nope no real syncro break-in, as far as a new clutch yes 500miles, but since I just replaced the clutch disc and throwout bearing. I'm not too concerned about break in for my application.

Oh by the way, last night on my test drive I happen to come up on a Zo6......hehehehhe smoked it.

Funny I can rebuild a transmission but I cant get the stupid axle seal on the passenger side to NOT LEAK. I just installed a new seal and a new axle......Am I missing something??

hmmm. only 2 things i can think of. if the seal uses a spring on the back side to keep pressure around the surface it's supposed to seal, it may have popped out when the seal was installed. usually i like to dab a little axle grease at 12, 4, and 8 o'clock at the back side of the seal where the spring sits in it's groove. the grease keeps it held in place while the seal is driven in.
either that, or the seal got nicked while reinstalling the axle. kinda doubt the latter, as i'd imagine you'd be pretty careful with that, knowing it was leaking before
also, did you put the seal in clean and dry? or use a sealant around outer edge where it meets the trans? and is the outer edge a rubber compound? or is it metal?

I put it in with a tiny bit of sealant around the edge and I was super careful during the installation too! So I'm wondering if the axle is weird?

Say what? How do you figure? They are identical on both sides. I had David from syncrotech look over the install and he said all was good.

The sealed side is supposed to face outwards.

There is no sealed side on these bearings. both sides are identical, so I installed them with the lettering facing out.
