ball joint separator.
Or pound on the top of the spindle to help break it loose. I use an air hammer with a flat-end anvil to pound on it, usually gets it loose without too much trouble.

What type of anvil did you use? I got one that was just round with a blunt end (no chisel ends or anything) so as to minimize potential gouges or other damage to the knuckle or upper control arm.
