How do you Keep Rotors from Rusting?
Sorry for the double posting, but...
I just put on new Brembo blanks yesterday and it rained overnight. Well, this morning the new rotor already had rust on all over it!! Will WD-40 prevent rust on them? Do I have to paint them? I hate the way it looks when the hub part and the tops of the discs are rusted.

The rust is unavoidable. It happens to us all. As soon as you drive and use your brakes once, the rust is scraped off. It's not bad rust, it's just a fact of life. You're not likely to see as much rust in the summer since there isn't as much moisture.

You can get nickel plated rotors, you can get cadmium plated rotors. I'm sure, if you wanted to, you could even find chrome plated rotors somewhere (note: this is a bad idea).
The problem with all of these is that the plating (or coating, if you prefer) gets taken right off the rotor. Unavoidable. The brakes are made of iron, and iron rusts. Period.
Now there is one alternative: carbon-carbon brakes. But really, that's only for racing, since they take a LOT of heat before they start working.

i'm with you rainmaker...oil on brake rotors is bad...
i had mine cad plated...although once used the plating on the disc that touches the brake pads came off, other parts that are exposed still have the cad plating and they don't rust. looks good too.

Only oil them for storage...and de-grease them before you put them on...
hehe....oil your brakes to prevent rust... more like prevent STOP!

Am I the only one here who thinks spraying your brakes with OIL is a BAD idea?

on the hub surface thing, not the part that the pad actually touches....the part the lugs mount onto and all that, you can spray paint em with engine paint like silver or a low gloss black or something and they wont rust....it looks a bit better too, mine are silver for now, im going to do them black....it only gets bad if you paint them colors like red-blue-yellow-green and stuff.

Warning: Do not paint the rotors.
I did once on my 240 and warped all 4 rotors. They will be out of balance and get warped after a few weeks.

Ok,this concerns me now.Is someone so **** that they can't deal with a little bit of rust on their rotors?

as soon as you stop the brake pads will scrape off any surface rust on the face of the rotor. as far as rust on the inside of the rotor, not much you can do about it.
wd40 would be a bad idea, it could possibly break down the pad material and will most cirtainly increase your stopping distance.

does warpage apply to painted only? i had mine cad plated and doesn't seem to be a problem...

Oil on the rotors is a horrible idea!! With the heat that is generated durring breaking the oil will burn up. High temp grease is a much better idea LOL
Really just live with it. or get some stylish break covers from your local discount auto chain.

i knew someone with stainless steel brakes. they dont rust when wet, and they look differnt from other brakes. i didnt see the scratch marks that i usually see on brake rotors

Cant you just clean it real good and then put some wax, that may repel water some bit. I dont mean the part that touches the pad.

Guys, chill out with all the answers that dont help him out. he is talking about the specific areas on the rotor that the PAD DOES NOT TOUCH! of course you guys are right, oil on a rotor anywhere is asking for brake failure... you would not have friction which is why brakes work, friction!
I bought Powerslots when I had to do my first brake replacement, and they were shiny cad plated but all four began to rust on the rotor hat and in the crevice where the rotor disc meets the hat and also where the outside diameter / circumference of the rotor is. that pissed me off, I mean, they were plated, and I paid for it too, why else are powerslots so much loot!?!?!?! so that is the moment I decided I would stop making "appearance" mods on my car unless they were a side benefit of a performance upgrade.... light yet beautiful cf hood for example after my fender bender.
you CAN paint the rotor hat like in the pic above. not a bad idea, just do NOT use too much paint. in fact the paint will be nice and baked on after a few hard driving trips since the brakes get so hot! sweet! I gotta say this- I do NOT suggest painting the calipers, that retains heat and actually makes your brakes/fluid/pads more likely to fade to high heat during heavy use.

Re: How do you Keep Rotors from Rusting? (owen_the_soyboy)
Well, I'd like to say thanks to junglistgsr, shadow, and owen the soy boy for their helpful replies!!! To everyone else, of course I'm not talking about greasing or oiling the braking surface of the rotor.
