I just had my first tune up and got the car all checked out they said it was fine. I removed that cap over that button on the shifter and pressed it down and it lets me shift now but it still locks back up when i put it back in park

the switch under the brake pedal controls the shifter lock, its most likely bad or the plug came loose, get a multi meter and check resistance between the 2 wires on the switch with the button pushed in you should read reisitance with it out it should read 0L which is open,if you read 0L between the 2 posistions of the switch it is defective and stuck open

stick your key into the slot next to the shifter, press the button to move it out of park see if that works.

My car did that, I just disabled the shift lock mechanism by simply unhooking a little rod. I'ts pretty easy, you'll see it if you remove the console. The only downside to this is that you can shift out of Park with no key in the ignition, or foot on the brake. Not good I guess if you live in an area with a high rate of auto theft, I dont so I actually like it better that way.
