Default car died while driving, then started awhile later..

ok...this is the second time this happend..its 97 integra gsr

first was like a month or so ago...kinda noticed its been only going up a hill..

first time it did, took a few cranks and started, then died, did this about 4 times till it didnt start, and just cranked..lucky i was by my parents house and got it to move good enough to roll to thier house.
after i got there no start just crank...well went back several hrs later, and first try it started...

anyway,i ended up goin ahead and changing fuel filter.and i pulled main relay and opened it up but it seems to look ok.thougt maybe solder spots were cracking up.

well..yesterday night was driving from my brothers place.going up a hill
shifted into third, let off clutch pedal and second later car cut off.
got stuck going up a hill so after a few atempts of trying to start decided to let it roll back onto a crossing street that was low traffic(idiots almost hit car 2x,hazard lights and driving lights both were on and it was dark and still almost got hit).
well while there on the road kept trying to start hopfully if would.but nope,no luck.funny thing i noticed, the last several times i tried it battery power would completly cut off,all the lights, this is while cranking, and when i let go of ignition switch light came back on strong...???

well i ended up calling a tow truck got the car towed home.
took about hr or 2 after waiting for tow truck and putting car on and gettting to my place and droping it off.well as soon as he dropped it i decided to give it a crank...and guess what the son of beast cranked up and started the first time..i was so pissed,110$ later and it turned on..guess she just wanted to go for a ride i guesS???

WELL,if anyone could have anyideas what this could be please let me know..
i was so ready to just part the car out last night..

oh and took it to parts store, and they did a battery and alternator check and BOTH were good.

what i was thinking somthing is gettting hot and shuts down?and when cools off itll start?or possible wire short?

help.

I would start there with the dizzy and follow steps for ignition troubleshooting then continue to check grounds and wires. Beyond that do a search for 'car died' and/or 'no start' and use the ideas listed throughout the threads.

Try the simplest of things first. Check your cap and rotor.

Check the distributor and the ignition coil (I think it's called a coil pack). My friends civic was doing that sorta like after you drove it alittle it stops somewhat like overheating but it would start about 10 minutes later. It was the coil pack.

Thanks for replies guys....

I guess ill pick up a new cap and rotor tomorow...come to think about it that's about the only thing I haven't changed since I had it..if it stalls ill move to the coil, then icm.

Also I was thinking that when it died I shoulda pulled a plug wire to see if it was sparking..

Hmmm....didn't think of that 1...you mean the wires for it?or the actual part you stick the
Key in and turn?
There's like 3 or 4 integras at my local junkyard..I can probly get wires for 10-15$
Just that if its the part the key goes into(tumbler I think is name)id have to get rekeyed right?

I picked up a cap and roto today..never realized there was 2 diff rotors for gsr model..what they said..(lol probly why the rotor in my old last integra kept falling off)

But the rotor did have a small burt peice on the part that contacts the metal things in the cap.but doubt that would cut off the car...but yu never know, stupid stuff does happen..

yes wires and tumbler. go get it at your local junkyard. and get a key made for it.
here in socal i payed 30 for ignition . and 50 to get the dude to make me a key on the spot.

and as far as the rotor. what car is in from?

i have a 90 b16 dizzy and it uses a 1991 integra ls rotor and cap.

so good luck. try a ls rotor.

oh and fyi! before you go wasting your time at the junkyard stripping the damn car. take a think saw to cut metal. the ignitions on hondas are not screwed in. theyre riveted. you saw a straihgt line (make it look like a flat headed screw) and use a flat head to lossen it,

Same theory on removing a tps (throttle pos sensor) from honda throttles.

good luck

O ok..ya I remember on this crx I had.someone tried stealing it and remember the switch being riveted...jut couldn't recall if the wires plugged into it or bieng 1 whole piece..

Guess ima do the rotor and cap..and try having the car on whilei fiddle around with switch and wires.maybe bump it and wiggle wires to see if it'll cut off..

If so looks like ima have some fun at the junkyard somtime soon lol.

Does anyone know if there's a difference between auto and manual ignitoin switch/wires?also
Obd difference?I hope they are the same....

its not bad wiring its the insides of the ignition that stop making contact,

just get it from the same car to be safe,

Well..took a look at column area...wigled wires around and wiggled key while car on..also bumped it in that area and nuthin....

Only thing whas the plastic were wires are connected to on ignition switch
Was a little loose..it kinda wiggled to I gave the 2 screws that mount it a good tigten..

Funny thing on the way to work, stepped on the gas to speed up and rpm needle dropped
To 0.thought the car turned off but no..just let off pedal and steped on it and went bak to normal..kinda weird..

Well,I'll probably make a trip to junkyard this weekend comin and see what happens..

Thanks for the help again..ill check back later.

As someone earlier mentioned, it's probably your ignition switch. Mine had a similar issue where it would shut off randomly. Mostly going over a bump or something that would jar the car a bit. If I wiggled the key in the ignition and held it in JUST the right spot, it would stay running. Otherwise it wouldn't start. Replaced the ignition switch and worked like new.

Edit: Oh yeah, my speedo needles went haywire like yours. I was like WTF is going on!?

Welll, today was my lucky day!went to junkyard and picked up ignition switch with a key in it..yeah!first car I checked out!
cost $13.xx + $2 for warntee...so about 16$ total.

By the way not sure if some know it came off 96 honda civic, had to move the wires around on the plug that goes into fusebox.but it does work...not 100% zsure on mounting butit looks very very similar.
Ill finish mounting it tmorrow morning and update.

So just incase In the future some one can't find dc ignition switch they might intrchange with 96 civic.but ill find out tomorow for shure.

well, got everything mount and put back in order.it went on with no issues.
so,for the ones that dont know, 96-98 civic ignition switch will work in an integra.
only thing is you have to repin the plug that goes into the fuse panel..

thanks folks for sugestions on replacing my switch.

we'll see how it does, hopfully this was the problem.

Well, guys...got somebad news.
On the way to work the car turned off again...
Lucky I was on down hill and pushed it with ease into a church parking lot.
Got lucky and they sent me home.someone gave me a ride to car and it started right up.
This was about an hr later.

Should I try changin distributor?crap.eveytime this happens I forget to check for spark out
The plug wires..

Also I ended up unpluging a smaller brown plug on fuse panel.thinking it was ignition switch plug.and I think because of this my srs light is now on.(guess this is what happens when you have to use cell phone as a flashlight lol)I. was trying to unplug it and unplugged injetor plugs for saftey reasons...work night shifts and it was in parking lot
By intersection.incase someone tried hotwire it.
