Default Best All Around Exhaust

I need some opinions on exhaust.. my '96 has a nasty rattle rite before the vtec kicks in, my first reaction - time for a new exhaust.

a lot of people i know just get custom tubing and throw on a HKS or APEX'i muffler having an extremly loud and sometimes annoying sounding exhaust. - im trying to avoid the extremly loud, droning ****.

I've been researching cat-backs, a few different companies and found that they're in the ballpark of 500 bucks. Does anyone have experience with different cat-back exhausts, my brother had one and it had major problems.. made about 50 different noises (not good ones either)

I just wanna get some opinions before i blow 500 bucks. don't want anything quiet, i want something that says performance, and not "got rice?" - Any help would be appreciated thanks

Edit: Mugen twin loop? any feedback?

but not all HKS or Apex'i exhausts are loud.. it usually depends on the shape/design of the canister.. and if would also depend if you have a resonator/presilencer on the bpiping as well..

Im actually partial the the RS*R exhaust. they have always made pretty decent products in the past and it doesnt look terribly different from a stock muffler, so less hassle from cops.

You could get custom piping to a es oval muffler, straight pipe exhaust, friend has one on his h22 hatch, sounds very very nice, not too loud either, and cost no more then 150 for muffler, and no more then 100 for welding piping together.

my choices also... but i do have a Apexi WS and have had it for 5 years now. i love her, but if i'd get a new exhaust i'd get the WS series 2 which is slightly improved, or the RS*R.

I have a fujitsubo and I love it. Granted no one wants to pay lot of money for an exhaust so ill recommend the Apexi WSII. THe Ws is real real quite, which is a big plus in my book.

Do not get the HKS Hi-power, a buddy of mine put it on his car and he trapped 4 mph less than when he had his WS on the car.

Thanks for the help boys, i really appreciated the artice SonicBlue - it covered everything except what i wanted to know about a cat.

Im guessing the article was written in california or somewhere where they have strict emission laws - i live in florida and if we had emission laws, all the hicks down here would be walking

I was wondering if replacing the cat with a straight pipe would help performance (i know replacing the resonator won't help but maybe getting rid of the cat will) any info would help - thanks

well, I looked around, did some research, and found that the GReddy Street Pro II was the closest to stock, plus, it's only loud when you are on full throttle. And got a few extra ponies from that, too... Next step? High-flow Catalitic Converter. YeSS!!-ekzrated
