Default BAD, BAD, BAD gas mileage. Perfect E-test?!?!?!

Hi guys, Ive been down this road with other cars, but I'm really confused. I've got a '99 integra Ls with only 50,000 miles on it. It passed E-test and ran zeros for more than one of the tests. the car runs smooth and has good power. I just put in new plugs cap/rotor and two new O2 sensors after I bought it. I'm only getting 220km or roughly 140 miles on the first half a tank (mix of highway and city) driving it gently. You can almost see the gauge drop on the highway. What the hell else could it be?. The car runs so well in every way, do the DC's just have a puny tank compared to the older integras? Please help. Thanks

i think it has about 11 gallons or so, do you smell gas maybe its a leak, the fuel filter may need replacing or the sock on the fuel pump could be stopped up

280 miles on 10 gallons, that's not too bad. I get 24mpg or less, but I'm boosted.
Could be your foot causing it
Worn/underinflated tires maybe.

Haha, well I was frusterated with it, and figured I might as well have a reason for the bad mileage and booted it on the highway home. but no, the car is very very clean. Maybe I'm just getting used to the shape of the tank. I know the DA's tanks get smaller near the bottom and they get less miles to the last half of the gauge, maybe the DC's tank gets larger at the bottom? I'll keep an eye on it, because this makes NO sense. Maybe I'm just getting cheap and old, and have nothing better to complain about, other than gas prices and bad gas......mileage.

Search for gas mileage, there have been a few long threads on this topic already.

Yes I found that out. Most cover the basic tune up/O2 sensor issues. I'll keep digging.

DCs tanks are 13.5 gallons i believe. For me the needle goes down to the bottom and when i Fill up, its only 10 gallons, So theres still like ~3 gallons of play for me when I get down to Empty. I usually get like 170-180 per half a tank, but I dont really push too hard most of the time.
If your getting bad mileage you might want to check out the injectors or something? run some seafoam maybe?

The most I've ever filled my tank to was today, 11.083 gallons. I'll have to check my manual later, but 13 gallons seems a lil much. I get 31mpg on my ls/vtec. 28mpg is good, but for the condition your car is in, might want to replace the o2 sensor and clean/replace fuel filters and clean your injectors too. Are you throwing any codes?

Why dont you fill the car all the way up, drive it til the E light is on then fill the car back up at the same station. Also when filling it up put it so that it fills by it self and dont top off the tank. Reset your trip meter on your car from the time you fill the car up. So if you put 13.5 gallons into the tank and have gone 300 miles with that fuel then you are getting around 22.2 MPG. (just divide miles by gallons). This way you can check the gas mileage of your car exactly then compare it to others and see what it is. If its low then start trouble shooting, tires that are low, dragging brakes, engine problems, accelerating too quickly, ect.
Good luck

Thanks guys, I put two new O2's in , I'm wondering if its just bad gas... I'm going to try a fuel filter, but I'm having a hard time seeing how a reduction in flow could cause it to use more??? We'll see. Thanks for the replies.

reductions in flow causes the injectors to work that much harder and by the time ignition fires all of the gas is not ignited

That interesting, I could see it that way too. I always thought the computer did what it could to always keep the A/F ratio constant, but I could see it that way. Maybe I'll swap it out tommorrow and see.

i have a 98 gsr that gets about only 23 mpg 9.5 gallons/223 miles. 130k bone stock. that's all the way down to E on the gas gauge for me. I know something's wrong and i started a thread asking in the forum., but that's a good question about the gas tank size, i really don't think mines is near 13.5 gallons. but to the guys that are getting better gas mileage than 23. I think my fuel filter has recently been replaced and tuned up, so i guess i'm **** outta luck. Maybe an alignment "might" fix it. but i don't think by much.

If I remember right the tank holds 13.2 gallons. 280 miles on a tank is actually pretty bad, I get about 330-340 before filling up and that's with about 2 gallons still left in the tank. If you searched you'd find like hundreds of threads about this... I know you've checked some stuff but there's the fuel filter, air filter, o2s, cat, tires, spark plugs, spark plug wires, etc. you can check.

Turns out I was sold the wrong O2 sensors. Thats what I get for trusting unknown ebay vendors! Theyre all spliced and installed so Im SOL. I bought the right one today. My wallet still hurts.

I get about 300-310 miles on a full tank(11 gallons) which comes out to about 27-28mpg. But that is only if I'm not hitting VTEC much. When I hit VTEC a few times it drops down to about 280miles on a full tank. I have replaced everything I can think of for a tune up except for the fuel filter and cat. Can The fuel filter help me much to attain better fuel mileage ?
