B18C1 Valve clearance questions.

Default B18C1 Valve clearance questions.

I'm adjust the valve lash right now on my 96 GS-R. I know the spec is .007 exhaust .006 Intake, and my question is, should the feeler gauge slide in an out pretty smooth or should it be pretty hard to slide in and out when its adjusted correctly? I'm terrible at gauging this.

You should feel some resistance...If you dont feel anything at all then it is obviously the incorrect gap since you could have any amount of space in between there

Okay so some resistance but it shouldn't be hard to slide in and out right.

correct. once you feel a tad bit of resistance your are within spec. no need to tighten it to a point where you cant get your feeler guage out

Okay what I did is I stuck the feeler gauge in there and tightened it up until the feeler gauge did not pull out, then I backed off the adjuster until the feeler gauge was able to move in and out with a little bit of drag.

Be mindful of not confusing the feeler gauges while doing both intake and exhaust and using the right .006 IN, not millimeters...

Yup, got it finished and seems to be just a fraction better and a tad bit quieter.

For the intake cam I tighten to screw to the point that it just barely grabs the .007 gauge, then tighten down the nut.
It should be tight enough to where you pretty much have to wiggle the gauge out. The .006 gauge should slide with little to no resistance, and the .007 should not pass through easily, if at all.

Same process for exhaust cam using .008 and .007 gauges.
