B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy *Edit (Solved)

Ok so I have a b18b with crower 62403's and recently switched from an automatic tranny to a gsr trans. Everything was running perfect afterwards for a few months until now. A couple months ago while driving at around 60 mph my car starting bogging out bad like it was missing until I rev'd it way up an let the clutch out and then I was able to drive again. I never had another issue with it until the other day. It started to do it again and by the end of the day I couldn't even drive the car anymore. I threw random misfire codes on 3 cylinders a few days ago. Since then there have been no codes but many problems. One of the most noticable problems is that my tach flutters like crazy, when this is happening I can hear a slight popping noise when the throttle is pressed. I can also smell unburnt gasoline coming out of the exhaust. I replaced the dizzy, checked my plugs, and my wires seem fine. Any other suggestions? The car stalls out now if I try to drive it, it will drive fine and then once the tach starts fluttering I know I'm screwed. I'm seriously stumped and pissed off, please help. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

smelling lots of gas? could be your o2 sensor.

Yeah, smelling gas. Plugs also looked white when I pulled them. I'm going to try another ecu today, but like I said no codes are being thrown. I wish some were popping up, then I would have some idea of what to do.

hey im having the same problem. i have a 95 gsr an it stutters an backfires at like 3k, 3.5k, or at 4. an the tach would stay there till i punch it. i can some times smell the gas. an wen i changed my spark plugs it was really white where the hook is. and after awhile of driving it would throw a code 43 fuel system supply. im going to change my fuel filter an 02 sensor

if i remember correctly, white plugs mean a lean fuel mix.
did you tune your car after you put the cams in?

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (LSracing94)

No never tuned, but I think I figured out what the problem is. The Vehicle Speed Sensor. I have 2 VSS Plugs, one of them is left over from the Auto to Manual conversion. I plugged up the other one. The car actually drives now, the speedometer doesn't do anything with this plug in, I'm throwing a VSS code, but I can get to school at least for now. I contacted the guy who did the wiring for the swap and am awaiting a call back, hopefully he will know what to do.

everytime ive had a problem where my tach went crazy it turned out to be the ignitor box. give that a check.

has the spark plug wires ever been changed?even if you test to see the ohm's/resistance and clearly shows to be that of specs, dopn't be fooled try to borrow some wires and replace them.i've just fixed my car, changed everything and decided to change the wires.no more stumbling on low acceleration.also had the 02 sensor go bad in the past and it 's very similar to that of stumbling and bogging.

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (integraswtrde)

Well I just had to replace one of the spark plug wires because it had gotten stuck to the spark plug. I wish I had never ditched the oem wires in the first place. I have replaced both of my 02 sensors in the past. The only code I am throwing is the VSS code and thats only with the one I have plugged up now. I'm gonna unplug it all together and see it I throw anything, then maybe I can decide if its the wiring or the sensor itself. ECU is a possibility but I'm not thinking its the problem.

when i had my jerking/stumbling problem,i had code 21 wich is the vtec solenoid.but it was the damm spark plug wire.

Well I just ordered some oe honda spark plugs. I'm taking my car to get checked out by the guy who did the wiring for my auto to manual swap tommorow. Its confusing, I am able to drive the car without stalling out now that I basically unplugged the VSS. No speedo, but I can tell how fast I'm going at certain rpms for certain gears. Oh well.

before you buy the wires, can't you just borrow some from your friends.also if timing is off by a tooth that can also happen.good luck man! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I'd think this sounds like classic igniton problems. Particularly the tach going crazy since, that's driven by the dizzy. The only plug wires worth a damn are the OEM ones. They last forever too.

Well I replaced the Dizzy which I snagged for 80 bucks locally. Got the plug wires for like 42 shipped from ebay. I'm not hurtin too bad from that stuff, I may just resell one of the distributors.

BTW I did change the distributor but it didn't solve anything. Only thing left are the wires which I'm waiting on. Basicly I can't give my car more than 10% throttle or I lose power. Seems like when I first start the car up it runs perfect for like 10-15 minutes, I can punch it full throttle to redline and then all the sudden it will start acting up again, I'm really stumped.

Back to basics, when it acts up, what's missing? How's the fuel pressure when it F's up? When's the last time you changed the Fuel Filter?

APPEARANCE: Ash deposits are characterized by light brown or white colored deposits crusted on the side or center electrodes. In some cases it may give the plug a rusty appearance.

CAUSE: Ash deposits are normally derived from oil or fuel additives burned during normal combustion. Normally they are harmless, though excessive amounts can cause misfiring. If deposits are excessive in short mileage, the valve guides may be worn.

So weird. After just messing around with the VSS plug today, I drove it real easy with no problems whatsoever. After about 30 miles of trouble free driving I decided to get into it a little. I redlined a couple gears and still no problems. I would be happy but this has been the common occurence here. Perfect performance for a while and then suddenly my car starts "Dying"

i had the same problem and it was one of my injectors that was stuck open

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (drastikchangez)

I haven't looked at the injectors yet. So it was making the tach crazy too? This is so annoying, I'm pretty sure its not a major mechanical problem with the engine because it happens randomly. Maybe I'll take a look at the injectors today.

Check the ground wire from the ecu; when this is loose, it will cause the behavior you have mentioned, and it can also damage the ignitor if left unchecked for too long.

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (motoman)

Well this could very well be possible. I installed aem pulleys and the alternator pulley is a good deal larger than the original. I have noticed very slight electrical issues such dash lights pulsing slightly. Maybe I will throw the stock pulley back on. F-ing alternator, such a bitch to get to on my teg.

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (Jake1220)

The alternator is controlled by the ECU. It's common for it to turn the alt on and off. You see it at night when the lights brighten and dim as you drive around. It's normal on all 4 wire alternator Honda/Acura's I cur the control wire at the ECU and now my alt works like a normal alternator.

Re: B18b - Misfire / Stutter / Stalling out / Tach Going Crazy - Please Help (MasterKwan)

So yours stays charging all the time? Well I put oem plug wires on today, checked the battery terminals, and ground wires, and inspected the fuel injectors. Basicly I can drive like normal until my tach starts getting jumpy, then the only way I can drive is to give it no more than about 10% throttle. It just seems like the fuel is not being ignited, I can smell unburnt gasoline when it starts acting up and I am pretty positive that its coming right out of my exhaust.
I might throw some new plugs in even though I just bought new ngk platinums like 2 months ago, they look fine, but I don't know what else to try.
