Default Automatic transmission will not shift to Park or other gears

The car is a 95 LS Integra. I bought the car about a year ago and it has always shifted hard from Park to Reverse. The last week or so it has been revving while in D4 every now and then as though it were slipping into neutral. Today the same revving occurred, but this time it would not get back into any drive gear. The car just coasted in neutral no matter which gear the shifter was moved into. When I tried to shift into Park, a grinding noise was made and I could only shift to the Park position with the car off. Even with the shifter in the Park position, though, the car still rolls like it's in Neutral.

So far the only thing I've had time to do is adjust the shift cable under the center console, which was off slightly, but did not make any difference for my situation.

Any suggestions on what to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is transmission is N/G, search here for how to pull automatic transmission trouble codes, and see what comes up. 94

absolutely check the tcm codes first. it is very possible that this is an issue with the tcm (faulty).
you can also try testing the shift solenoids. test resistance of each shift solenoid terminal to ground. resistance should be 12-30ohms. replace as necessary.
if the resistance of the solenoids tests good, you'll need to locate the A and B pressure ports. install a 0-100psi gauge to the A pressure port. with the vehicle in park, start the engine. pressure should read 70-95psi. using this method, check both ports. if either read above 95psi, the modulator valve is stuck (located inside the valve body).

solenoid test:
with the engine running, connect one end of a jumper lead to the positive battery terminal and the other end to both solenoid A and B terminals in the connector. the pressure should drop quickly to under 6psi. if the pressure stays above 6psi or drops slowly, replace the solenoids

now that i think about it, im not entirely sure if that actually controls the trans gear position in a 95 as its mostly cable driven, but ive never heard of one grinding if the parking prawl was not working properly to be honest.

yeah, the grinding would be indicative of a mechanical issue

ok so yes the wiring diagram does indicate that the switch does operate in conjunction with the TCU to determine the gear position.

yeh your right because i think the most that the switch would do on this particular trans is just prevent the car from starting if it thought it was outside of the P or N position.

could also drop the pan and have a look at the shift cable and detent arm. check their operation.

yea, detent arm sounds suspect

I feel like I'm missing something, tcm codes? I showed codes 20 (electrical load detect) and 70 (automatic transmission blah blah) from the abs light. I've heard of the lights in the cluster that show which gear you're in flashing to show codes also, but I saw nothing from them.

Is this another set of codes I may be missing? Does this not use the same jumper plug under the dash? This is my first automatic car, excuse my not knowing this.

your transmission codes would come from your D4 light when the service check connector is jumped on a OBD1 car.

i thought the codes were read from the led on the tcm. the d4 light just flashed to indicate that a code was/is present.
or is the procedure different from a da?
again, i'm just asking. i'm not sure

well it will, but the tcm also operates off the service check connector to display those codes, otherwise the tcm will just indicate that it has codes, you jump the connector, turn the key, and watch the codes in the same manner you would the check engine light on OBD1

After going back out and looking to see if my D4 light were flashing with the service connector jumped, I found that D4 is the only light not functioning in my cluster, even when i move the shifter through all its positions. I'll remove the cluster tonight and try replacing the bulb.

One thing i did notice though, is when i was moving the shifter back and forth I could hear a solenoid on the transmission click when the shifter went to D4 and D3 positions, but only those two. Is this normal?
