Default aem fuel rail, high fuel pressure?

ok, i installed a aem fuel rail, guage and fpr. i set the fuel pressure to where it needed to be and my car smoked worse than most people chimneys in the winter. it was set to 38psi which is where the haynes manual says. i had to back it down to where the fuel rail reads about 20psi to get the smoke to go away and get it to stop running so rich....

my question is, do you guys think the guage is reading wrong or do you need lower fuel pressure with the high flow fuel rails? i found the installation instructions for the fuel rail but it didn't say anything about fuel pressure.
