about to buy GS-R

new to the board and also to integras. i currently drive a modified 97' automatic maxima, that i am going to sell to a guy in a couple days. for a while i was looking at another maxima, but this time 5speed. but now i am leaning towards a GSR. i am only 18 so i figure theres no better time to get a sports coupe. and they handle amazingly and i hear they are just about as fast a 5speed maxima (low 15's)

i am looking for 94-95gsr. many i have found have been 4door sedans. i dont want one , but i might end up with one, so just incase, are they significantly slower due to extra weight? and do they handle worse?

most also have between 85-120kmiles. i know these cars are reliable, but can i expect it to go til 250+ without any major work. if i take care of it?

also, what am i looking at to make it a mid 14sec car for cheap. i figure the usual intake, headers, exhaust, good tires, will give me 14.8-15.1 but is there anything else i can do without breaking the bank.(not turbo, s/c, nitrious) yet...........

sorry for the newb questions, but just looking for some background info,

thanks

The GSR is a pretty reliable car itself. If you keep up with the maintaince of the belts and fluids you shouldn't have any problems.

The Sedan is about 150lbs heavier than the coupe, and that'll take about one tenth (.1) away in the quarter mile. No real significant loss.

The GSR is already a high 14second car if you can drive well. When I got my 95 GSR, I raced plenty of newer 5spd Maximas and walked the dog on them, stock.

Hit up the search if you want more info or specifics on modifcations.

Re: about to buy GS-R (dtr maxima)

Having owned a maxima before owning an integra I can help you out a little.

benefits: handling is much better, driving it is much more fun, it's rev happy so dont feel bad taking it to redline, much sportier feeling car overall, full independent suspension unlike 4th gen maximas with their multilink beam in the rear.

cons: mods dont respond nearly as well as on the maxima, lack of torque... going up hills feels much weaker, cabin is much more louder, long trips can get annoying.

you can add on top of the mods youve listed, some mild cams (itr/ctr or skunk2 stage1s), chipped ecu, and valve springs and retainers to help you get around mid to lower 14s.

Re: about to buy GS-R (tilt)

GSR is an excellent choice of the sports car. I am too a owner of a gsr but I have mine for so long that I need to change to a different line. (nissan 240 sx perhaps with SR20DET) GSR suspension are excellent but with a choice of ITR sway bar, TWO thumps up. (ask any fellow who has itr bar). Overall performances and suspension are great. Not a bad investment.

AmplifiedGSR 10-25-2003 07:17 PM

thanks for the replies guys. i pretty sure the gsr will be my next car within the next week.

one thing thats really important though.....
most of the GSR's i am finding in my price range have about 90-130kmiles. looking from the bad point of spectrum, if i buy a GSR with 125k miles can i expect it to last years to come. as long as i keep up maintanance, and take car of her, could i expect 200-250k out of the car, without any major problems?

thanks

Re: (darrinbrewer)

you can expect any honda motor to last you well over 200,xxx if you dont beat it up all the time. and then when it finally comes time that she does break down then you get to buy a new motor (mmm h22). just make sure you get it checked out first by your mechanic https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: (2muchGT)

i don't see why it wouldn't last that long with regular maintenance, im hoping my gsr will. Def get the itr rear sway bar first and shocks and springs. I got koni yellows on eibach sportlines with the bar, It's good shit.

ok, thanks for the help guys. i am going to get a GSR as soon as i find one with good miles for a good price. found one right by my house. milano red(i think) 96' GSR, with charcol cloth interior, cd, all that. completely stock with 125k miles for 5,800 OBO. he said he might be able to get down to 5,000-5400. what do you think?

also, some guy that had his car forsale said he had lowering springs, and i asked if he struts on his car. he said that gsr's come with kyb struts stock. is this true?

thanks again

Get a 94-95 if you can find one. You'll be happier. I know I was https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

That's a pretty nice price. I'm not a huge fan of red, but I think I would still pick that one up.

thrty8street 10-26-2003 12:29 PM

go with the GSR you will be happy. they are more fun to drive than a maxima. try doing some autocross.

Re: (GSRGuy17)

is there much of a difference between the 94,95 and the 96+?? i was originally looking for a 95' but but this 96' presented its self. so what is the difference with those years, or atleast why would you say to get 94,95 instead of 96+?

thanks

GSRGuy17 10-26-2003 08:46 PM

Re: (dtr maxima)

a teensy bit more power to start with, and responds better to mods. Of course you could just do an OBD-1 conversion on a 96. Get what's the better deal for you https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: about to buy GS-R (dtr maxima)

It really depends on what u like, hondas/acuras or nissans. I have 2 cars an ls and a gsr, i like hondas and acuras, but its pretty expensive to suit up your car and get it jacked. thats why i dont want to put money into the race scene no mores. Look into ur priorities. Good LUck

thrty8street 10-27-2003 04:06 AM

94-95 is OBDI, 96 is not a good year, 97+ OBDII

obd2 has stricter emissions tolerances -- it can be arguable that obd1 cars make more hp, and are more responsive to mods.
