Honda Civic Type R: The Ultimate Tokyo Sleeper?

By -

Explore the streets of Tokyo, Japan with the Honda Civic Type R.

Who among us wouldn’t want to visit Japan? The Land of the Rising Sun. The Japanese Domestic Market. Just a few hours of car spotting around Tokyo would be enough to create memories that would last a lifetime. But for Italian YouTube reviewer Marco ‘Marchettino’, he got to see Tokyo in one of the coolest ways possible, from behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Type R.

The Type R looks great anywhere. But there’s something incredibly cool about seeing it on its home turf. Even in traffic full of cars we don’t get in America, its rakish lines and Championship White paint make it stand out. “The Type R has a shape that looks like a UFO,” Marchettino says, “Look at the rear!”

As in America, Marchettino points out that even in his native Italy, the Type R attracts attention. But in Japan, it actually has a bit of a sleeper vibe to it. In the home market, it’s possible to drive and not have to deal with the attention Type R owners deal with in other parts of the world.

After briefly driving it around Tokyo, our host already feels comfortable calling it a “truly great sports car.” While Honda provided him with a car that has an infotainment system in Japanese. Despite not having working SatNav, he found that JDM Civics actually can pick up TV stations on their dash screens! While that’s a cool and quirky surprise, he sticks to phone navigation to take the car (and his viewers) out on the town.

“To make the review, I can’t wait to get out of Tokyo, find some mountain roads to use this car properly,” he says. In the city, he mentions that the firm clutch pedal makes commuting a little tiring. “But,” he says, “for sport use, the pedal and gear stick are absolutely amazing!”

After giving us a look at what it’s like driving around Japan’s most populous city, he says: “Driving around Tokyo is not the easiest thing, I’m stressed to say the least…” He ends the video here. A full test of the Type R is coming soon. While we can’t wait to see that, this video is a very cool glimpse of Honda’s pride-and-joy in the wild in its home market. We wish we were the ones doing the driving, of course, but Marchettino’s driving impressions are the next best thing.
